1 Job Description Job Title Department Grade Location Responsible to Responsible for Community Engagement Manager Creative Learning D Barbican Centre and Guildhall School of Music & Drama Senior Manager (Creative Learning) - Barbican Ambassadors - Community Engagement Apprentice Since the Barbican and the Guildhall School launched a creative learning partnership in 2009, more than 42,000 people including children, young people, families, community groups and artists have participated in our learning programmes and activities, while more than 300,000 have enjoyed our programme of free events produced in collaboration with our partners. We believe that the arts have the power to transform lives, and that people of all ages and backgrounds should have access to world-class music, theatre, dance, visual arts, film and spoken word. Designed to give people the opportunity to engage with the arts, access some of the world s most in demand artists and discover their creative voice, our cutting edge projects take place in the Barbican s iconic building, the Guildhall School s state-of-the-art facilities and in community centres, parks, hospitals, schools and colleges across the City and east London. Ranging from those that give people their first taste of the arts through to those that enable existing artists to push the boundaries of their practice, all projects inspire and bring people together giving them new skills and confidence and raising aspirations. Much of this work is informed by sector research, including research which identifies that students from lowincome families who take part in arts activities are three times more likely to get a degree (The Case for cultural Learning - Cultural Learning Alliance, 2011). Our Creative Learning department is organised by five key strands on which our activities are focussed; Young Creatives, Schools and Colleges, Community, Emerging and Practising Artists and Public Events.

2 Purpose of Role To develop and implement a strategic approach to ensure that the Barbican and Guildhall School s World Class Arts and Learning offer is made available to and engages the widest possible audience, with an emphasis on young people and adults from across the City and East London. Developing and maintaining a strong network of contacts across the City and East London boroughs, including community organisations Maintain and develop the Barbican Community Ambassadors programme provide pastoral support to existing Barbican Ambassadors Work in close collaboration with colleagues in the Creative Learning, Marketing and Artform departments To build an understanding of communities in East London and reflect their needs internally to inform the work of the Barbican Centre and Guildhall School of Music & Drama Main Duties & Responsibilities 1. To develop community engagement with the Barbican and Guildhall School s Arts and Learning programmes across East London and beyond, working closely with third sector such as charity and community groups 2. Build and establish a network of relationships to help deliver the Barbican s audience department framework, including community groups, stakeholders, agencies and local education authorities focussed on east London 3. In consultation with Creative Learning, Arts Programming and Marketing teams, identify and agree community engagement priorities in line with the agreed Strategic Framework and the Barbican s Strategic Plan. 4. Engage programmers and project managers with local groups, steering groups, The Barbican Youth Panel and children and young people, providing a cross borough voice on the needs and interests of audiences, informing programming and how we engage with City and East London communities 5. Provide strategic advice in programme development and offsite projects to ensure audience and participant engagement targets are appropriately considered 6. With the Creative Learning Curators/ Producers, design and develop sustainable models for projects and events that will engage communities, in particular families, with our on site and off site activity

3 7. Work with Marketing and other colleagues to communicate the Creative Learning programme, and wider Barbican and Guildhall School programmes across East London 8. Play an active role in a range of networks and groups, including the City Family Arts Network and Culture Mile 9. Connect participants with specific widening participation projects, signposting to programmes, short courses and HE opportunities at the Guildhall School 10. With the Creative Learning team, support the design and implementation of evaluation for community projects in particular to support collection and collation of information 11. Keep up-to-date with arts and community engagement strategies and initiatives 12. Support the delivery of the Barbican s commitment to equality, diversity and community engagement and act as a specialist source of knowledge in these areas 13. Report back, advise and action as appropriate issues arising from community stakeholders in relation to Barbican Guildhall programmes and wider Barbican initiatives. 14. Develop and manage the Barbican Community Ambassadors programme for east London, working closely with young people to identify how best to structure the programme and how best to engage them in offsite projects. Manage the Community Ambassadors budget General 1. 6 Summary of Terms and Conditions of Employment This summary is given as a guide and is not intended to form part of an individual s contract of employment. Salary The salary range for this job is 33,390-37,800 per annum inclusive of all allowances. This figure will be reviewed annually from 1 July in line with the pay award for other salaried staff within the City of London Corporation. Contract The position is offered on a fixed term basis for 1 year (Maternity Cover) Hours of Work Normal hours of work are 10.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday being 35 hours per week excluding lunch breaks, inclusive but the post holder shall be expected to work the hours necessary to carry out the duties of the position. Frequency and Method of Payment This is a monthly paid appointment and salaries are credited to a Bank or Building Society Account on the 11th of each month. Annual Leave There is an entitlement of 28 days annual holiday plus Bank Holiday. There are subsequent increases to entitlement to annual holiday according to length of service. Sickness Absence and Pay The City of London Corporation has a comprehensive Occupational Sick Pay scheme, details of which can be found in the Employee Handbook which will be made available to you upon commencement.

7 Pension You will automatically be admitted to the City of London Corporation s Pension Scheme. Employees contribute between 5.5% and 12.5% of their pensionable pay to the scheme, depending on salary. If you do not wish to join the Scheme you must make a formal declaration stating you wish to opt out. You may contact the Pensions Office directly should you have any queries relating to the Local Government Pension scheme and your entitlements under this scheme. Continuous Service If you join the City of London Corporation without a break in service (subject to certain exceptions) from another body covered by the Redundancy Payments (Local Government) (Modification) Order 1999, your service with that institution will count for the purpose of continuous service. The amount of continuous service which you have will affect your entitlement to certain contractual benefits; for example, annual leave, sick leave and maternity leave. A full explanation of Continuous Service is contained within the Employee Handbook. Probationary Period You will be employed initially on a six month probationary period. Should either party wish to terminate the employment during this period, then one week s notice will be required on either side, except for summary termination for gross misconduct. Notice Period One month by either party after satisfactory completion of probationary period. Learning and Employee Development The City of London provides for financial support and time off for staff to study for appropriate qualifications which relate to their duties or undertaking professional skills update training. There is also an in house programme covering more general training needs. Employee Volunteering Programme Through its partnership and regeneration work, the City of London aims to contribute to the social and economic regeneration of the seven boroughs bordering the City: Camden, Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Tower Hamlets and Westminster. These boroughs contain some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the country. The Employee Volunteering Programme, established in 2002 allows staff to volunteer their time, skills, knowledge and expertise to benefit local residents whilst developing their own professional skills. All staff are given the opportunity, subject to line management agreement, to take 2 days of volunteering leave per year to enable them to do this.
