This dynamic individual will focus on enhancing systems for volunteer management, internal processes, and social media and marketing. He or she will identify, prioritize, and implement strategies aimed at strengthening the organization s capacity, allowing better and increased services for families affected by mental health conditions. Service Description : Are you ready to alleviate poverty and expand access to mental health services in Upstate South Carolina? In the second year of the Greenville County Behavioral Health VISTA program, the Capacity- Building VISTA will serve at NAMI Greenville. This role will bolster support and increase the capacity of existing no-cost behavioral health services. Greenville, South Carolina continues to receive national and international recognition for its southern charm, opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, arts scene, sports culture, and cuisine. Greenville has been lauded by The New York Times as one of the 52 cities in the world to visit in 2017, by USA Today as one of the 10 best emerging destinations, and as one of America s ten best downtowns for its combination of revitalized commercial and park space. Greenville is located at the base of the Blue Ridge mountains. Each VISTA and VISTA Leader participating in the Greenville County Behavioral Health VISTA Program is eligible for a housing stipend of $50/month and membership to a local recreational/gym facility. This site also provides funding for the VISTA to participate in a PULSE Young Professionals cohort or local Toastmasters professional development opportunity. 2 VISTA Assignment Description 2 Title: Capacity-Building VISTA GCBH VISTA Assignment Description (VAD) Sponsoring Organization: Mental Health America of Greenville County (MHAGC) Project Name: Greenville County Behavioral Health VISTA Program Project Number: Project Period: 07/20/ /19/2019 Site Name (if applicable): NAMI Greenville Focus Area(s) Primary: Healthy Futures VISTA Assignment Objectives and Member Activities Goal of the Project: To improve health outcomes for all residents including uninsured and underinsured, low-income adults, teenagers, and children by bolstering support and increasing the capacity of existing no-cost behavioral health services. By concentrating on enhancing systems for volunteer management, internal processes, and social media and marketing, this individual identifies, prioritizes and implements strategies aimed at strengthening the organization s capacity, allowing better and increased services for families affected by mental health conditions. These activities support GCBH VISTA theory of change that the right early treatment can change lives by reducing school dropout rates, hospitalization, incarceration, and unemployment. Objective of the Assignment (07/20/ /19/2019) Recruit, train & grow volunteer leaders to improve and increase capacity of agency s current programs and services. 1. Observe current programming and recruitment and training processes. 2. Review current volunteer duties and resources. 3. Conduct informal interviews with current volunteers and document results to better understand the challenges and strengths of current volunteer recruitment, management, and recognition systems. 4. Develop and conduct an informal survey of other NAMI affiliates to learn best practices associated with volunteer management. 5. Review and enhance current volunteer job descriptions. 6. Advertise volunteer opportunities through web, social media and media tools/partners. 7. Host orientation and help train new volunteers. 8. Ensure all training procedures are fully documented and replicable. 9. Help manage volunteer schedule, and ensure that such scheduling procedures are clearly documented. 10. Create and implement a plan for monthly volunteer appreciation initiatives. 11. Ensure volunteer-related reporting (hour tracking, potential volunteer databases, etc.) are up-to-date and complete.

3 VISTA Assignment Description Work with organization s leadership to develop and document recommendations for the next three years for volunteer recruitment, training, recognition, and support. Objective of the Assignment (08/20/ /1/2019) Implement an assessment of current policies and internal processes to identify and develop plan to address weaknesses. 1. Review the organization s current policies and procedures and ensure that current systems are consistent with the focus areas identified in the organization s strategic plan. 2. Conduct informal interviews with two NAMI affiliates or state offices to gain insight into best practices associated with incorporating more efficient. 3. Assess how technology is currently being utilized for volunteer management processes and to track donations and other development funds. 4. Identify challenges in current systems and develop three-year plan for organization to improve these processes. Objective of the Assignment (08/20/ /1/2019) Work to increase the public awareness of the organization and the need for increased access to behavioral health supports by creating a three-year written strategy for utilizing social media and web-based communication tools to ensure well-coordinated and results-driven messaging. 1. Work with organizational leadership including staff management team and review strategic plan to finalize list of organization s marketing messages/talking points for key stakeholders and audiences. 2. Review the organization s current and recent use of communication tools and resources including media partners, social media, the organization's website, and electronic newsletters. For each tool/relationship, gather and record corresponding benchmarks (example: web hits, followers on each social media page, e- newsletter subscribers, etc.). 3. Work with Board of Trustees Members, Executive Director and development staff to create a targeted three-year draft plan for the organization s marketing efforts to include goals for public engagement through the identified communication tools. This plan will align with the organization s strategic plan and focuses on utilizing communication tools to ensure well-coordinated and results-driven messaging. 4. Begin to implement plan to possibly include working with media partners to increase awareness of MHAGC services and mission, sending timely updates to media partners, updating social media pages in a timely and strategic fashion, updating the organization s website and possibly making design changes through the vendor, and sending out regularly-scheduled electronic newsletters.

4 VISTA Assignment Description 4 5. Documenting and communicate with management team with any updates and revisions to the plan. Objective of the Assignment (08/01/ /19/2019) GCBH VISTAs will spend approximately 5% of their service participating in a supplemental project designed to foster collaboration & problem-solving for a community-wide issue(s) related to Healthy Futures, particularly access to behavioral healthcare. This session occurs during a CRISISline/TEENline shift and can be scheduled according to the site s and VISTA s schedule. It allows the VISTA to improve his/her listening skills and increase understanding of behavioral health needs while contributing to a capacity-building and partnership-focused project related to expanding behavioral health services.
