1 La Crosse Winona ASQ Section Spring Conference Sustainability is the Key to the Future Thursday, April 7,, 2009, 2:30 pm 7:30 pm At t the Minnesota State College Southeast Technical Tandeski Center, Winona, MN PROGRAMS: 2:30 pm Strategic Planning and Sustainability Goals Krista James, M.S., Senior Lecturer UW-Stout In 2001, the University of Wisconsin- Stout was the first university to win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Among the unique programs used by UW-Stout is the implementation of a comprehensive annual planning process that aligns campus priorities with the allocation of resources. In 2008, UW-Stout began a process of strategic planning to reflect its polytechnic designation and the realities of an ever-changing world. That effort, referred to as FOCUS 2015, resulted in the development of 4 five-year goal statements for the university. One of the goals, Focus on sustainability: President s Climate Commitment and Classroom Initiatives, led to the development of a Climate Action Plan and University Priorities, which includes strategies for implementation, assigning responsibilities and timelines, and allocating resources. This presentation will describe in more detail the process and strategies used for implementing sustainability programs across the UW-Stout campus. Bio: Krista is one of the campus sustainability leaders at the University of Wisconsin- Stout, where she is a member of the Environmental Sustainability Steering Committee and the Sustainability Across the Curriculum Network. Krista is an accomplished teacher and researcher with extensive experience integrating environmental sustainability projects into course curricula. Krista has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a MS from the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. 2 3:30 30 pm ISO Environmental Management System (EMS): The Path to Sustainability Murray Hawthorne owner, COMPESS LLC,, Compliant Environmental and Safety Solutions Sustainability implies that a healthy long-term relationship between two or more distinct entities is achievable in perpetuity. In this light, your business and the various aspects of the natural environment (air, water, land) that your operations impact are the primary focus. Employing a structured approach toward environmental management translates directly into investor confidence, self-assurance among your organization s leadership, the reputation as a good steward within your community, and fostering goodwill among your workforce and customers. In this session you will learn about the ISO Standard and how it provides a robust framework to achieve sustainability. Bio: Murray s career includes working the high stakes, uncompromising federal regulatory environments of the FDA, EPA, OSHA, and FAA. As a former helicopter pilot, medical device manufacturer for a Fortune 500 company, and safety &environmental compliance manager for a Tier 1 automotive supplier, his practical experience from immersion in these highly-regulated environments has built a solid foundation for trustworthy guidance. To succeed in our highly-regulated economy, you need robust tools and proven processes that, when used, produce the results you expect - consistently. Aside from ISO 14001, his knowledge and skill set included QS 9001, Lean, Six-Sigma, and an MBA from the University of South Carolina. Murray firmly believes that active working relationships with your regulatory agencies are a best management practice. 4:20 pm Break 4:30 pm The People Side of Lean Tools to Help You Move Beyond the Low-Hanging Fruit and Sustain the Journey Patrick Seaton owner, Innovative Management Tools LLC Lean is a forever journey, not an x-year event. The challenge that many companies face is how to build a foundation for long-term success. When we start the journey, the low-hanging fruit provides the energy needed to get things going. But once this fruit is gone, many companies lose the momentum and abandon Lean partially, or completely, while the need for Lean philosophy still exists throughout the organization. This session will introduce you to tools, strategies, and ideas for creating long-term support and drive for Lean before the low-hanging fruit is gone; at the time the realization hits that the momentum is waning, and beyond. It will bring together both the hard and soft Lean tools into one toolbox as well as include three organizational diagnostic tools that help focus improvement efforts. Bio: Patrick s passion is helping people successfully manage change. He is the founder and president of Innovative Management Tools LLC, a provider of creative

3 solutions for helping organizations respond successfully to change events that include downsizings, restructurings, strategic growth initiatives, process re-engineering, Lean implementation, and mergers and acquisitions. Currently, in addition to coaching small businesses, he is the COO of a 75-employee manufacturing company in Wisconsin.
