These positions are located in the Laboratory Services, Forensic Science Labs Washington/San Francisco/Atlanta within the Office of Science and Technology, in Beltsville, MD, Walnut Creek, CA and/or Atlanta, GA. Responsibilities Serves as a technical authority in the analysis of fingerprint evidence from criminal investigations of firearm violations, bombings, and or arsons. The fingerprint specialist serves as a subject matter expert in the examination and comparison of fingerprints, both visible and latent and maintains a broad based knowledge of all areas of forensic science. Function as a technical expert in fingerprint examination providing guidance and assistance to ATF Officials, other Federal Agencies, State and Local Government organizations, private laboratories and industry on forensic evidence, analytical methodology and instrumentation. Performs fingerprint examinations with little technical guidance using scientifically sound and applicable procedures. Developing latent fingerprints and the examination and comparison of fingerprints both visible and latent. Represents the laboratory in national and local peer groups or professional organizations. Professionally interact in these organizations and routinely participates in activities to enhance the image of the Bureau and to advance the profession. Prepares laboratory reports for customers and articles that are suitable for external analysis and which may be used in court testimony. Searches recovered latent fingerprints against the Federal Bureau of Investigation Next Generation Identification (NGI) for potential comparison candidates. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progresses. Salary ranges for each of the locations are as follows: Atlanta, GA- $77, to $100, Beltsville, MD - $81, to $106, Walnut Creek, CA -$88, to $115, Travel Required Occasional travel nights per month. Qualifications To Qualify for the GS-12: You must have at least one year specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Specialized Experience for the position is defined as analyzing complex fingerprint cases and imperfect and partial latent fingerprint impressions that contain only the minimum number of points necessary to make an identification and conducting methods development projects to improve latent fingerprint examination capabilities.
