1 POSITION AND CANDIDATE JOB DESCRIPTION PRESIDENT & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Prepared by: Sally M. Sterling Amy McWethy August 8, 2018

2 THE OPPORTUNITY One of the leading public media organizations in the country, Twin Cities PBS (TPT) is launching a search for a new President and CEO to succeed Jim Pagliarini, who will be retiring after 21 years of distinguished service. TPT has highly talented and regarded teams who are passionate about the organization s work and mission; a strong track record of fiscal stability and significant investment in a newly renovated office; and a firm commitment to evolving the ways in which the organization reaches its audiences online, on-air and on-the-ground. As TPT seeks to expand the myriad ways in which the organization engages Minnesota communities, the new President and CEO will provide a solid bedrock of visionary leadership that builds on TPT s 60-year legacy, and will pave the way to a future of sustained opportunity that ensures TPT stays at the forefront of public media both locally and nationally. In the pursuit of this mission, this leader will stand at the helm of the 200-person organization to provide overarching general management to all of its endeavors and enterprises in the quest to continue programming excellence, lead the development of existing and emerging distribution platforms, spearhead robust fundraising and development initiatives, and maintain fiscally sound and thoughtfully led operations. TPT has a reputation as a strong and impactful organization and its next President and CEO will step in at a time when the budget is balanced, the collaborative staff is ready to push the organization to new heights, and the groundwork is laid for extraordinary, transformational change. ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW Twin Cities PBS s history may have deep roots in television, but many of its strategic priorities land squarely on cultivating opportunities to reach our state s diverse communities in new ways with the stories that matter most to them. TPT has served as Minnesota s storyteller for decades and today the organization reaches, informs, connects and engages with more people than ever before. Along with a boon of arts, culture, public affairs, history, long and short-form stories, TPT is also the preferred media partner to hundreds of local non-profit organizations that turn to TPT to help engage Minnesotans in a range of important issues. In addition to serving as an invaluable resource to local communities, TPT is also a leading producer of national transmedia programming and ranks among the most-viewed PBS stations in the country. In 1957, TPT s first educational show was broadcast to Twin Cities households and today, the organization continues that tradition with the nationally distributed SciGirls, a science, technology, engineering, and math franchise geared at inspiring girls to pursue their interest in science studies and careers. TPT also serves distinct audiences through two national online publishing hubs: Next Avenue, public media s only national journalism service for America s booming older population, and Rewire, a destination for young adults on the cusp of personal and professional change. 2 Page Sally M. 3 Along the way, TPT has racked up an impressive collection of Peabody and Emmy awards, proving that great things come from a collective staff that shares a common mission of enriching lives and strengthening communities through the power of public media. Armed with a $30 million annual budget, TPT serves communities that place a high value on its non-profit organizations, and its dedication to reaching diverse audiences whose needs are not met in the world of commercial media drives fervent, multi-generational support. If achieving great things is an equation, then TPT s staff is its common denominator. To learn more about our people and programs, click here.
