4 What we do. lthough our main work is to supply clean drinking A water and taking away wastewater, there s so much more going on behind the scenes. Think about the journey that water has been on, where it started to how it eventually became a humble cup of tea. Or how about once you ve flushed the loo. Where does the water go and what s done with it? Well, here are some answers for you. Water We supply 2,500 million litres of water to our customers on a typical day - that s enough to fill up 1000 Olympic sized swimming pools. If we continue as we are, demand for water could outstrip supply by We re working hard to make sure we don t run out by: helping customers use less installing meters replacing and upgrading our network to prevent leaks Wastewater We do some pretty exciting stuff with your waste too. We take away everything that goes down your sinks, toilets and drains. We then recycle it before safely returning it to the environment. Each day, we take away 4.4 million litres of waste which is then transported through 67,000 miles of sewer pipes enough to wrap around the world 2.5 times. It then We supply 2,500 million litres of water to our customers on a typical day - that s enough to fill up to 1000 Olympic sized swimming pools arrives at one of our 350 sewage treatment works, where we squeeze water out of sludge (the mucky bit of waste) with the same types of machines Magners Cider uses to juice their apples. The sludge we get from our waste is then used to create electricity. For example, in 2016/17 we made enough electricity from waste to power 86,000 homes which is more than 20% of the energy we need to power our business. Last year we saved 24m using poo for power. Improving customer service Our customers are what matter most to us, and we ve got a lot of them all with very different needs. To improve our service, we re doing lots of work to make the overall experience customers have when they interact with us better whether it be out on the street or over the phone. We re also making a huge investment in our systems to make dealing with us easier.
