Internal: Natural Resources Group and Shaping Sustainable Markets Group, Communications, Finance and the Strategy and Learning Group External: partners and stakeholders in ongoing Forest Team and Shaping Sustainable Markets projects, including on community forestry in the Congo Basin; fisheries projects in Francophone Africa, private sector agencies, including small-medium enterprises and large-scale businesses; and bilateral and multilateral financing institutions Permanent Full time (35 hours per week) Central London Grade 3 42,924-53,374 per annum depending on experience plus benefits Context IIED is a policy and action research organisation. Main responsibilities 1.Research and Intellectual Leadership (40%) Undertake research related to economic analysis of sustainable and inclusive fisheries and land use investments by locally controlled forest-linked businesses that we support in the context of climate change mitigation generally and community forestry in the Congo Basin Undertake research on quantification of the contribution of forests and other natural resources such as fisheries to the economy in selected number of countries to strengthen the case for investing in sustainable, viable and inclusive businesses. Identify and develop a programme of capacity building to foster bankable investment proposals that can be implemented at scale, channelling growing funding opportunities from public and private sectors. Contribute to setting out strategies and relevant knowledge for effective engagement with public institutions, NGOs, private sector and financing institutions to influence collective actions towards financing and strengthen partnerships with locally controlled forest-linked, fisheries and other natural resources based businesses. Write, co-write, edit and publish a diversity of outputs in southern and internationally recognised outlets. 13 International Institute for Environment and Development

14 2.Management and coordination (20%) Develop work plans, realistic budgets and take decisions related to effective allocation of funds for successful implementation of the initiatives. Identify external consultants and partners following IIED procurement policies, assign adequate TOR, cost and remuneration structure consonant with the expected deliverables and impact of the work carried out. Manage and supervise the work of colleagues, partners, consultants and other collaborators and provide mentoring and coaching to research as appropriate to achieve the desired impact. Establish a system of preparation of technical documents for donor reporting, liaise with the financial and communications coordinators in monitoring expenditure and ensuring that spending follows the donor requirements and produce the expected products and results. Establish project management and M&E systems for own work within existing institutional frameworks and working closely with group managers and coordinators as appropriate. Manage personal administrative tasks related to own work, and engage with existing systems of work and communication within the Institute, including participation in relevant team, group and IIED-wide meetings and tasks including review of work by colleagues. 3.Communications, outreach and influence (20%) Identify innovative forms of presenting and sharing research results and calls for action that are effective for the different audiences that the work aims to influence. This is particularly critical to strengthen our partnerships with private sector and financing institutions as well as their effective engagement with governments and NGOs. Organize workshops, seminars, dialogue platforms and innovative forms of engagement with the audience that this work targets for effective dissemination of results and to influence policy at local, national and international level. If need be, create or enhance existing platforms and networks for cross sector and multi-stakeholder dialogue on opportunities for financing and strengthening private sector partnerships at national and global levels. Engage with the private sector particularly impact investors and multilateral financing initiatives to mobilize support to existing initiatives of work with small and medium enterprises and community level initiatives. Contribute to establishing new and strengthening our networks of private sector partners and financing institutions to strengthen support of sustainable business. 4. Business Development and fundraising (20%) Lead the design of concepts and proposals including writing investment proposals in response to calls and proactive engagement with public and private financiers. This should include seeking to engage colleagues and partners as appropriate for ensuring best capacity for developing and delivering the projects. Ensure that projects developed address gender equity through innovative ways of engaging and benefiting men and women across the spectrum of our work. Build an understanding of the opportunities, risks and risk mitigation measures of public and private sector finance for sustainable, viable and inclusive businesses. Contribute to identifying strategic areas of work or development of new research agenda for the Forest Team, the Natural Resources Group and Shaping Sustainable Markets Group. This job description defines the level of responsibility and areas of involvement of the post, the details of the duties may change over time and do not form part of the contract between IIED and the postholder. 14

15 Skills and experience Qualifications Knowledge Essential Postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline Economics of natural resources and/or environment, and finance Natural resource management Desirable PhD in a relevant subject Environment and development issues Experience Business Substantial research experience evidenced by a track record of relevant publications including writing investment proposals. Proven capacity to engage with debates, processes, actors and institutions in sustainable development arenas including on issues of economics, financing, locally controlled and large scale private sector companies and investors. Significant experience of coordinating and sustaining diverse teams or collaborative networks, including from a distance. Track record of securing funding for own projects from a diversity of financial supporters. Work experience in the Congo Basin and other countries west Africa Skills Fluency in English and French - conveying complex messages in a clear, concise and effective manner to different audiences orally and in writing Working knowledge of another international language High level of technical, analytical and conceptual skills. Organisational skills for self and others. Management skills: Projects: handson experience of managing and implementing the project cycle; People: ability to coordinate, support and develop team members and individuals.
