RESULTS Actions produce results Beliefs influence actions Experiences foster beliefs All 4 layers must be aligned. Maintaining alignment is a process and it never ends.

Culture change must be led Three Essential Leadership Skills 1) The skill to lead the change. 2) The skill to respond to feedback. 3) The skill to facilitate.

Principle #1 Attempting culture change without the buy-in and total support of the leader at the top will not succeed.

Principle #2 Clearly define the intended results. This will drive the activity, energy and effort of your team.

Principle #3 Get team members ready for the change by helping them see why the change is needed (the big picture) and how the change will benefit them.

Principle #4 To gain momentum, begin with intact teams that are positioned to be agents of change.

Principle #5 Implementation Integration Integrate the desired culture change into the current organizational processes, procedures, and systems.

Important Points 1. Resistance to change is minimized if you have created a climate of trust. 2. How you communicate the change impacts the degree of resistance. 3. Help your team members understand the benefits the change brings to them. 4. Listen deeply and empathetically to them. 5. Empower team members to contribute. 6. Create an organization-wide feedback and improvement loop.

CULTURE produces results It s the bottom line.

What is culture? Team culture is the creative sum of all the people on a team. It is their collective thoughts, their beliefs, and their actions.

Why is culture important? When a team of people bond together and act as one, anything is possible. Conversely, if a culture is fractured in any way, the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

Every team has a culture. Culture either comes as a result of an organized effort to build it or it develops by chance. A team s culture either works for them or against them.

Culture starts at the top. Great leaders build their culture to achieve the desired results. They create ways to get their players working together for a common goal.

The challenge. Many leaders have never been taught how to create a culture of greatness or maintain one.

Leaders create the conditions for making a culture of greatness.

Culture consists of 3 moving parts. All 3 must be aligned and in harmony. People Culture Structure Process

Great PEOPLE make a great culture.

Develop the people that produce the results. It is the people that make the structure and process work.

Great cultures have a strong STRUCTURE. 5 essential requirements

STRUCTURE Core Values Asserts who we are & how we do things Vision Declares what our team will become Purpose States why we do what we do Standards Defines what right looks like Goals States what we will achieve

Important Questions 1. Is your team built on compelling values? 2. Is your team s vision, purpose, standards, and goals easy to understand. Building a culture of greatness is based on your team members clearly understanding how to transform words into actions.

The PROCESS transform words into actions. Words Actions

The PROCESS produces 5 essential qualities. Trust Trust is the most important ingredient Belief Positive beliefs lead to powerful actions Mental Toughness The inner drive, courage, and discipline to give one s best at all times Accountability Greater accountability produces greater results. 58 Group Activities

Reaching Greatness When a team becomes united and become aligned, it can seem magical. You can feel it and see it in their body language. They ve become greater than themselves. They work with a sense of purpose beyond the ordinary. They bring out the best in each other and refuse to lose.

How do you know if you are on a team of greatness? You and your teammates set aside personal egos and put the team first and foremost. There are no words that can describe the mutual respect, trust, and sense of caring that you have with your teammates. Teams of greatness don t get stagnant or complacent. They take pride in performing at their best and going beyond the call of duty. Team members hold each other accountable. The team s standard must be maintained otherwise it is not a team of greatness. Colonel Joe Gelineau Special Forces United States Army
