Some of the reasons may include: To survive or remain viable To maintain competitiveness To keep up with new technologies and enhance productivity To streamline or expand their operations as a result of changing market or business trends To align or meet with Government s objectives With restructuring comes changes changes in (1) operation, (2) HR policies and (3) manpower needs. During such times, what do our leaders need to know, in order to be constructive and effective advocates for our workers? Through this course, participants will: Understand the protection accorded to employees under the law Acquire good practices and procedures for retrenchment arising from mergers and the dispute settlement machinery Know the employer s rights and employee s protection and the impact and effects Impact and effects of company restructuring 7 June, 9 am to 5 pm 23 October, 9 am to 5 pm GRIEVANCE HANDLING, DISCIPLINE & DISPUTE MANAGEMENT Grievances are complaints, in the workplace, formally brought by individual employees, through the official grievance procedure. Discipline refers to the formal actions taken by Management against an individual who fails to conform to the rules established by the Management within the organisation. Disputes refers to the issues relating to industrial matters (employment, terms of employment, conditions of labour etc). For the handling of both matters, a certain level of sensitivity and skillfulness is required, lest the issues escalate. Therefore, this course addresses the knowledge and skills required to handle grievances, discipline matters and manage disputes. 3 Industrial Relations HANDLING WORKPLACE HARASSMENT When employees treat each other with respect and professionalism, a positive workplace culture will be created. However, when the workplace is disrupted by someone disrespecting their co-workers, anger and resentment can destroy morale. Workplace harassment can damage relationships and destroy lines of communication among employees. This course aims to equip leaders with the ability to recognise workplace harassment and knowledge of how to confront harassment situations that might arise in the workplace. Understand the need for protection against workplace harassment Understand the framework of the protection from the Harassment Act, including o Various offences under the Act o What constitutes workplace harassment o How to determine if a course of conduct is harassment under the Act Learn about the options, remedies and avenues if one is affected by workplace harassment, including getting a Protection Order Know what can be done at the workplace to prevent workplace harassment Better understand the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Workplace Harassment 15 May, 9 am to 5 pm 16 July, 9 am to 5 pm TERMINATION & DISMISSAL Termination of an employee s services can be due to a variety of reasons, ranging from poor company performance to an employee s lessthan-stellar performance. Whatever the reason, being dismissed has a negative stigma and might affect future employment opportunities. When a union member is dismissed, union leaders are often called upon to represent said member. This course aims to equip leaders with the knowledge and skills required to represent members effectively in matters of termination and dismissal. 4 Industrial Relations UNDERSTANDING THE EMPLOYMENT ACT The Employment Act is the main labour law in Singapore, governing the basic terms and conditions of employment. It spells out the obligations of both employers and employees when they enter into a working relationship. It is essential for all leaders to have a good understanding of the Employment Act, so as to ensure that the members are treated fairly and to minimise disputes on employment issues with management. This course aims to equip leaders with a current knowledge of the Employment Act, so as to ensure fairness within the workplace. Acquire knowledge on the contents of the Act, its coverage and the terms and conditions of employment Understand the key issues for a contract of service Learn about the structure and process of the dispute settlement machinery 15 March, 9 am to 5 pm 16 August, 9 am to 5 pm UNDERSTANDING WICA & WSHA While every effort is being made by employers to keep their workplaces safe, accidents and unexpected illnesses related to the work environment do occur. If this happens, what are the employees rights and what are the employers obligations? This course aims to equip leaders to handle claims from members who may suffer injuries from accidents or contract occupational diseases, arising out of and in the course of employment. 5 Industrial Relations WORKPLACE INVESTIGATION & BOARD OF INQUIRY When misconduct happens at the workplace, the allegations need to be investigated. The investigation needs to be fair, consistent and transparent to the employee involved. The processes of Workplace Investigation and conducting a fair Board of Inquiry is necessary for every union leader. Without the correct application and clear knowledge on the proper procedures, the employee might be at the losing end of the process. This course aims to equip leaders with a good working knowledge on workplace investigations and proper conduct of a Board of Inquiry. As such, it is essential for leaders to be armed to think fast and well, understand issues and challenges at their levels, eliminate assumptions, and differentiate between strong and weak solutions.
