3 Session One: Basic principles and the value of infrastructure management To understand what infrastructure management is and why it is important to you and your community. 75 minutes This session provides an understanding of the basic principles of prudent infrastructure management, by reviewing the role of the elected members as stewards of the council s significant investment in infrastructure. In particular you will be able to: Identify the when undertaking infrastructure management Introduce the concept of lifecycle management Understand the drivers behind infrastructure management in local government Gain an appreciation of the real value of infrastructure management to you as a councillor. 4 Session Two: Elected Members As Decision Makers To gain an understanding of where infrastructure management fits into the business of local government. 90 minutes Most councils spend large amounts of money on buying and building, operating and maintaining assets which are expected to provide service for many years. Through this session you will be better able to understand the significance of infrastructure decisions on the organisation as a whole, including on the long term viability of the council. The focus is on ensuring councillors understand: The LTP and infrastructure planning Infrastructure management plans Financial budgeting and reporting Management of risk, and Performance reporting LGNZ KnowHow June 2014 v5 Page 4 of 7

5 Session Three Looking in more detail at key elements of infrastructure management To explore some elements of infrastructure management in more detail. 120 minutes The focus of this session is to gain a better understanding of the elements in infrastructure management that councillors frequently come into contact with as decision makers, including: Identifying where each element fits into the infrastructure lifecycle Appreciating the importance of the element in the overall management of community infrastructure Identifying the key councillor considerations for each of the elements LGNZ KnowHow June 2014 v5 Page 5 of 7

6 Session Four: Key asset life cycle strategies To gain an understanding of the key lifecycle strategies infrastructure managers use to manage assets on behalf of their council. 60 minutes Knowledge of key asset life cycle strategies is designed to assist you to better understand the basis of the infrastructure decisions you are being asked to make on behalf of your community. This session includes topics on: Growth and future demand forecasting Condition and performance Risk management Maintenance analysis LGNZ KnowHow June 2014 v5 Page 6 of 7

7 Session Five: Conclusion, evaluation and wrap-up To reflect on today s learning 15 minutes This activity requires the facilitator to wrap-up the day, including: Tying up any loose ends that have remained parked from earlier in the day Reviewing expectations and concerns Asking participants to complete their evaluation forms.
