This makes the form much easier to read and clearer when we photocopy it the job reference number can be copied from the job advertisement the job location will be on the job advertisement the candidate number will be written in by us once you have returned the form to our office 1

2 the people who look through your completed form (short listing or short listing team) to see if you have the skills and abilities needed for the job, will only see Part C of the form. They will only see your candidate number and all personal details will be anonymous. please do not send in a CV instead of, or as well as, the application form. We do not consider CVs during the selection process please fill in all sections of the application form. If some parts are not relevant, write not applicable or N/A in that space if you need more space to complete any section, please use extra sheets of paper. Do not put your name or any identifying information on it as it needs to remain anonymous. Secure it to the relevant section, and we will add a candidate number to it when we receive it Personal details section this gives us your contact details such as name and address. Under title you would put either Mr, Mrs, Ms, Dr or just leave blank if you prefer we may need to contact you at some time throughout the recruitment process. Please let us know the most suitable method of contacting you. Contact will usually be made during office hours. Health section please list in this section the number of occasions you were off work in the past year because of illness. If you would like to discuss this for further clarification please call our recruitment office. Declarations unless stated to the contrary in the job description, person specification or application pack you must tell us about any previous convictions either classed as spent or unspent. You 2

3 must tell us about all convictions and cautions regardless of how long ago the offence may have occurred. Convictions from other countries must also be notified. If in doubt please call our office at the help line number on page one of this guidance. If you are applying for an administrative post or another post which does not involve patient contact you will be asked to complete a Basic Disclosure. In this case you are only required to list any previous convictions which are unspent please note that having a conviction will not automatically disqualify you from getting a job with us. Careful consideration will be given to the relevance of the offence to the particular post in question. However, if you are appointed, and it is found that you did not reveal a previous conviction your employment may be terminated remember to read, consider and sign the declaration at the bottom of page 2 Qualifications section please tell us of any qualifications you have. This can include school standard grades, GCSEs highers, or work based qualifications such as SVQs or NVQs remember to write down any non formal qualifications or certificates that you think are relevant to the job you are applying for Present (or most recent) post section if you are currently out of work, please write this in the job title space please write your start date in month/year format MM/YYYY please tell us briefly about your duties (what you do or did in your job). 4 Employment history section this is where you write down all the jobs you have done previously remember that if a job you have done in the past supports or is similar to the job you are applying for, please tell us more about it in your support of application statement on page 6 of the application form use a separate sheet if you need more space References section referees are people who know you at work. Please give the full names and addresses of 2 referees, one of whom must be your present or most recent employer and can confirm your job details you should check that the people you have put on your form are happy to be referees your referees will not be contacted unless you are a preferred candidate after interview. A preferred candidate is someone who is the preferred choice for the job, subject to satisfactory checks where appropriate Driving Licence section you only need to complete this if the job requires you to drive. Please check the job description or person specification. if you have any penalty points / endorsements on your driving licence and are applying for a post that requires you to drive you should insert the details of the number of points / endorsements here. Statement in support of your application this is one of the most important parts of the form. In here you say why it is you want this job, and can list all your skills and abilities that you think help to match up you against the person specification. In here you could describe how something you have done in a non work setting (for example, planning and 4

5 leading a group outing) shows planning skill and some leadership qualities Where did you see the advertisement section please try to remember where you heard about this job, and tick the relevant box. 6 Recruitment Process The Scottish Ambulance Service recognise that Ambulance Control Centre (ACC) staff are vital to the success of the Organisation. It is important for the Service and for potential employees that we take the time to recruit the best people for the job. The Service needs people who are capable of responding to challenges that arise now and in the future. The following information is designed to assist you in gaining an insight into our recruitment process: 1 The completion of a detailed application form A detailed application from is included in this application pack. This includes an additional form to be completed, which relates to the core competencies required for the post of Emergency Call Taker. Guidance is attached to assist in the completion of the form, which will be used for shortlisting. Application packs can be obtained from West ACC, Scottish Ambulance Service, West Of Scotland ACC, Caledonia House, 140 Fifty Pitches Road, Cardonald Business Park, Glasgow, G51 4ED 2 Telephone Interview Following the shortlisting process, you will be required to undertake a short telephone interview, which will be recorded for assessment purposes. The interview will be biographical in nature. If you are successful at this stage you will be invited to an ACC Assessment Centre to complete the skills assessment, which is detailed below. 3 Recruitment Day Skills Assessment Audio and copy typing tests minimum standard required is 35wpm at 90% accuracy Short PC based spelling test Town/City names PC Based Information Processing Exercise simulated emergency call information Paper and Telephone Based Information Processing Exercise calls will be recorded for recruitment purposes. 4 Face to Face Interview If you are short-listed for the Recruitment Day, you will be sent a letter with details of the date, time and location of the Assessment Centre. As part of this day you will have a face to face interview when you will be given the opportunity to ask any outstanding questions. 5 Appointment Candidates will be notified, in writing, the outcome of the recruitment process. 6

7 Core Competencies Guidance Sheet Emergency Call Taker Detailed below are the six core competencies required for the post of Emergency Call Taker. Please read each of the competencies carefully and provide evidence of your skills, achievements and experience against each competency on the Competency Support sheet within the application pack. 1.Data Input, Telephony skills, IT Literacy The post you are applying for is in a fairly specialised environment. You should be able to operate IT equipment and type information into a system directly from the telephone. These specific skills will be assessed at the Recruitment Day. 2.Communication/Interpersonal Skills This job relies very heavily on your ability to communicate with others, often in difficult circumstances. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as you will communicate with a range of internal and external contacts. You will be providing the first communications link in patient care. A confident telephone manner is essential. Experience in a public contact role would be advantageous. 3.Coping Under pressure You will be the first link in patient care receiving and assessing information from Emergency 999 callers who may sometimes be incoherent, aggressive, emotional, or even abusive. The ability to work calmly under pressure is essential, as you will be required to obtain accurate information to enable the deployment of an appropriate response. At all times you will follow Service protocols, which include the provision of pre-arrival advice and reassurance to 999 callers. 4. Decision making/using Initiative Although you will be working in a protocol driven environment you will often have to use your initiative in order to obtain accurate and comprehensive information from anxious callers. Whilst working as an Emergency Call Taker, decisions are often based on limited information and a judgement call needs to be made. At other times you will be provided with a mass of potentially conflicting information and you will have to decide which factors are of greatest significance. 5. Accuracy/Attention to detail All relevant information relating to incidents is accessed through our computerised command and control system. There is a requirement for the information to be as clear and as grammatically correct as possible as it will impact directly on patient care. 6.Team Work Within the ACC environment, the ability to work as a team will be vital in that you have to be tuned in to what your colleagues are doing and be ready to help when someone requires assistance. Equally you must be prepared to ask for assistance when required. 7
