4 Why You Need an Internship Congratulations you ve finished the spring semester. Now what? Don t let the summer get away from you! Consider an internship/coop position. Whether or not it s paid or for credit, an internship is a valuable tool in career exploration. Here s why: 1. You ll get real world experience. Working as an intern gets your foot in the door at a professional company, giving you the opportunity to learn in a professional environment. You ll find out how to dress professionally, manage your time, and learn more about the career path you re pursuing. It s a great way to test out a possible job and meet others in the field. Which leads us to 2. Networking. Having an internship introduces you to possible employers and future colleagues. Prove to them that you re a valuable and reliable intern, and it could lead to a full-time job, references, and professional connections. Internships can also be a great way to find a mentor in the field, who can help lead you along your career path. Also, many employers hire interns permanently after they complete their degree program, so think of it as taking the inside track. 3. Build your resume. Employers are more likely to hire applicants who have demonstrated past interest in a field and an internship/coop is a fantastic way to show that. An internship will add professional experience to your resume, making you more marketable in the future than someone whose resume shows no experience in that career field. 4. Find out if it s the right field for you. Hopefully the internship will reinforce your plans to enter a career. But what if it doesn t, and you realize that you re just not interested in working in that field long-term? That s ok! It s much better to have this realization during the internship than after completing your degree and accepting a full-time job. Figure out what you did and didn t like about the field and shift your path that s all part of career exploration! Internships are important tools in career exploration. Want to learn more? Visit the STCC Career Development Center for more info!

6 Internship Etiquette Tips Your summer internship can help you gain valuable work experience. Here are tips for a successful internship this summer: 1. Arrive on time and stay late. Show that you are reliable, understand the importance of time management, and are committed to the job. 2. Don t hesitate to ask questions. You aren t expected to know or understand your new work environment right away. Listen carefully, take notes and ask thoughtful questions in order to understand the company s procedures. You're there to learn! 3. Dress the part. You are judged by your appearance. Take the extra time in the morning to dress your best, even if you only have a few key pieces. Follow the company dress code. Showing up sloppy, wrinkled or too casual sends the message that you don t take your internship seriously. 4. Put your cell phone away. Texting and taking personal calls during the work day will give the appearance that you are only biding your time until you can check summer internship off of your to do list. Limit your cell phone use to your lunch break or for emergencies only. 5. Network within the office. Make a positive impression on every staff member you encounter, even in other departments. You never know one of the team members may end up being your future supervisor. At the very least, they may be able to provide you with a good recommendation. 6. Stay positive and professional. Stay away from office gossip and keep a positive attitude. Try not to use slang, and speak professionally. 7. Stay in touch. After your internship has ended, continue to keep in contact with your boss and coworkers. You may be the first person they think of when a future opening comes up in the company. Adapted from
