2 Coal, iron ore, container and POL put together constituted about 80 per cent the total traffic handled by both major and non-major ports during the period FY Coal, iron ore, container and POL accounted for major share among the total cargo handled at ports. Annual traffic at ports to grow at a moderate CAGR during the Twelfth Five Year Plan Planning Commission has estimated total traffic at ports to grow at a CAGR about 14 per cent during the Twelfth Five Year Plan. However, given the plethora issues surrounding the projects in the power, steel and coal sectors coupled with the slowdown in overall economic growth, CARE Research expects the overall traffic at ports to grow at a moderate rate during the Twelfth Five Year Plan. Coal (thermal and coking coal) forms the 2nd largest commodity handled by ports which accounted for about 17 per cent the total traffic in FY12. With increasing quest for thermal and coking coal and rising dependence on imported coal, CARE Research expects the share coal traffic at ports to rise by the end FY17. share iron ore traffic handled by the ports during last couple years has been on the declining trend. Further, in view rising trend domestic steel producers using iron ore fines coupled with high export duty, CARE Research expects the share iron ore in total traffic to decline by the end FY17. Share Coal traffic at ports to rise, while share iron ore traffic to decline up to FY17... share traffic handled by Non-Major ports to increase going ahead traffic handled at non-major ports during the Eleventh Five Year plan grew at a CAGR 13.7 per cent surpassing the growth in traffic at major ports at a CAGR mere 3.8 per cent during the same period. CARE Research expects that the traffic at nonmajor ports will continue to surpass the traffic growth at major ports going ahead. Consequently, the share traffic handled by non-major ports in overall traffic is expected to witness a rising trend. overall capacity utilization at ports declined during the Eleventh Five Year Plan led by incremental growth in capacity as against the growth in traffic. capacity at ports grew at a CAGR 11.1 per cent while the traffic grew at a CAGR 7 per cent. CARE Research expects the overall capacity utilization at major ports to decline. However, the utilization level at non-major ports is expected to rise going ahead led by strong growth in traffic. Overall capacity utilization at ports to decline going ahead
