2 How to Keep Your Garden Record Your record book is an important part of your 4-H garden project. It will count 25 per cent of your garden exhibit at fairs or in garden contests. Make it complete and accurate. Your protect will not be finished until your complete record book is turned in to the extension agent in charge of 4-H Club work in your county. Attend meetings of your garden club and follow the suggestions made by your club leader. When you start your project: a. Fill in all blanks on the cover page. b. Fill in the land record at bottom of this page. c. Decide where your garden is to be and draw a plan of your garden on page 3. During the spring and summer: a. Fill the blanks under seedbed preparation, page 6. b. Enter the kinds of vegetables (crops), the dates planted, the amounts, and the cost of seed or plants on page 4. c. Keep a record of fertilizers used, sprays, dusts, and poison baits used for control of insects and diseases, and rodent control on page 6. d. When vegetables are used from your garden, keep a record of the bunches, heads, pounds, etc., on the daily harvest record sheet, which is separate from your record book. When you finish your project: a. Be sure that all vegetables grown in your garden are recorded on your daily harvest record sheet. b. Transfer totals for each crop from your daily harvest record sheet to your record book, pages 4 and 5. c. Total all columns showing cost (expenses) and all columns showiri value (receipts). They are all starred. Pages 4, 5, and 6. d. Write the story of your garden club work, page 7. e. Follow the instructions under summary, page 8. f. Give your record book to your 4-H Club Leader. 6 Story of My Garden Club Work Tell in your story how your garden has helped the family food supply and some of your experiences in growing your garden. Tell about preparation of round, weed control, conserving moisture, fertilizers used and why, control of insects and rodents. Mention tours that you made and the visitors that came to see your garden. Pictures and clippings showing and telling about your garden will add value and interest to your record book..
