1 Avocado Market Trends and Prices March 2015 Market trends March 2015 Low arrivals and calm demand characterized the first half of the month. The global supply has been stable and moderate and, with limited sales and availabilities, the market until week 12 showed only slightly tenser. In the hass segment, the last Chilean volumes have been sold and volumes from Israel and decreased with quality issues for some Israeli brands as a consequence of the bad weather in January and delays for the supply from (mostly due to the rainfalls). Relatively small volumes from Mexico, Kenya (very limited volumes) and Peru completed the offer. Prices oscillated slightly until week 12, with small adjustments generally not exceeding 0,50 Euro cent/ctn. The commercialization has nevertheless been difficult as the high prices, even though satisfactory at the wholesale level, lead to low sales at the retail level and stocks risked to build-up again even with small volumes available. Sales finally took-off in week 13 when demand has proven more dynamic in view of Easter; prices have increased and stand now far above average. At present, the market is strongly undersupplied even though the supply level of the winter sources is correct for the last time of the season. In the green segment volumes decreased and turned very limited as the winter supply is going to an end; prices are firm and above the average. The first fuerte from RSA is on the market. Imports of Peruvian green avocado might be very limited this year as considerable quantities remained unsold during the last season; the first fuerte from Brazil sold at 9,00 Euro/ctn.

Market perspectives The market could turn very tense in the next weeks: prices might further firm-up, especially for mid sizes, because of the Easter operations and given the fact that the global supply is turning very limited. The transition between winter and summer suppliers will certainly present very small volumes and the demand, traditionally active from Easter onwards, will not be satisfied because of the small supply volumes. The season from Israel and is going to an end: deliveries from Israel will be decreasing punctually until the end of April and exports from might be cut to concentrate on the domestic market as a result of the rainfalls and anticipated warm temperatures since some years now. Prices of hass avocado could slightly decrease straight after Easter but will remain high and very firm in April. The market will probably ease only when the supply from Peru will become consistent at the beginning of May; shipments from this product origin are delayed because of the rains and will increase slowly; at present the export potential of Peru stand at tons in comparison to tons last year but the export shares per country of destination are still uncertain (low California production but more Mexican pressure in the exports towards the USA). Exports from South Africa are also delayed because of the rains and will probably be down 10-15% (13,5-14 million boxes) following a record crop in the previous season (15 million cartons last year); exports composition will most probably be about 60% hass and 40% green. Volumes from Kenya and RSA are forecasted to remain limited. Finally, the hail damages in Mexico should not halter the remaining production volumes which will nevertheless be forwarded mostly towards the Northern European markets and North America. In the green segment, the Mediterranean season will close and volumes of fuerte from RSA should strongly and quickly develop; the first batches of fuerte from Kenya will be available. With high prices in the hass segment, big interest and higher prices should be noticed for green varieties.
