We have the solutions to reduce downtime and increase production. A Dedicated Group This dedicated group is focused totally on the specifi c needs of the rim manufacturing industry We speak your language. We have standard components for handling your aluminium or steel rims. We have a full line of components: cylinders, grippers, slides, and rotary actuators, which can be combined or used individually to provide the motion your application requires. With millions of component variations, we can help in the machining, casting, painting, inspection and centering area to improve your productivity. If an application requires a modifi ed component, the PHD team is ready to help. We welcome custom requests for unique solutions, regardless of quantity or frequency of order. PHD and our local MDN partner will work closely with you to fi nd a solution for your application needs. The products, supported by our strong commitment to delivery and service, have made us a leader in industrial automation. To be used for all different kinds of applications from handling in machining or in casting, PHD s products are standard on spec by a number of the leading automotive rim manufacturers. Our Series GRR Gripper is the market leader for handling rims. With its light, but very robust design and very high moment capabilities, PHD s GRR is the ideal choice for handling your rims. 2 Copyright 2006, by PHD, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 3 We understand your unique requirements. Series GRR Guardian Gripper Narrow width and a wide range of available jaw travels Compact design provides high grip force and large moment capacities with low overall weight. Rugged design withstands high impact and shock loads. Unique dual air-passage piston rod design promotes rapid bore pressurization for short cycle times. Three large diameter jaw guides spanning the length of the gripper provide stable jaw travel, long allowable tooling length, and high moment capacities. TC fl uoropolymer composite guide shaft bushings in combination with scrapers provide long life and smooth jaw travel in demanding industrial environments. Synchronizer is enclosed, protecting the mechanism from debris. Non-synchronized and independently controlled jaws allow fl exibility to support diverse applications. Optional Rodlok locks the jaws mechanically in a stationary position in the event air pressure is lost. GUARDIAN GRIPPER ML Jaw Gripper 3 jaw parallel gripper to handle 14" to 24" rims 150 mm stroke per jaw 3000 N grip force at 6 bar Rack and pinion synchronizer minimizes backlash Based on proven GRR technology Very robust design Used in machining and testing application where it is not possible to grip inside the hub or inside the rim well Flat design allows easier handling inside the machine. Multiple jaw-position sensing possible Optional Rodlok locks the jaws mechanically in a stationary position in the event air pressure is lost. Gripper Weight: 41 Kg Gripper Dimensions: Ø862 x 210 CUSTOM Series RID Rotary Actuator High torque High axial and radial bearing load Through hole shaft for built-in air communication ports Unit is standard with integral manifold interface. Optional hollow pinion for routing and protection of electrical cables and air lines is also available. Optional angle adjustment with shock pads or shock absorbers allow for infi nitely adjustable rotation from

Application Solutions PHD supplies you with not only standard components, but also adaptors and complete tooling. Our engineers have many years of experience in the design of any kind of tooling and mounting, so you can concentrate on your core business of manufacturing rims or supplying complete and automated rim handling cells rather than worry about the gripper design. Foundry / Casting Cell Handling rims in the casting cells Take rim out of the oven and place into cooling station GRR Gripper Product: GRR x200 Major Product Benefi ts: Narrow width and long travel Rugged design withstands high impact and shock loads Three large diameter jaw guides provide low jaw defl ection and allow high moment capacities. Rack and pinion jaw synchronization with minimal backlash TC fl uoropolymer composite guide shaft bushings Optional Rodlok locks jaws mechanically in a stationary position for part retention. 5 million cycles minimum rated life with standard seals Finishing / Machining Cell Loading and unloading of machining cells Product: GRR x300-V1-Z1 Major Product Benefi ts: (see above) GRR Gripper 4

Inspection Cell To lower the inspection device to the rim Product: SFP540x1000-NBx-AE-M Benefi ts: PHD can provide a bolt-in solution (SFP 40) Requires no bearing support Repeatability to within 0,05 mm Easy to mount SFP Slide GRR Gripper Major Product Benefi ts: Space-saving design Smooth, precise movement High load capacity with very low defl ection due to internal rail bearings Two bore sizes offered (27 and 40 mm) Long travel lengths (27 mm bore up to 1800 mm, 40 mm bore up to 3400 mm) Multi-position Centering Station In this application the rim is lifted and rotated, looking for the stem hole. Cylinder is mounted rod up Products: GRR x250 CVAS5V 80 X 275 -L9-M Benefi ts: Longer life with CV cylinder and GRR gripper Lowest cost of ownership CV Cylinder Major Product Benefi ts: CV Cylinder ISO/VDMA interchange for easy mounting PTFE wear ring and built-in shock pads for long cylinder life Rodlok option for easy and dependable mechanical locking of piston rod Optional built-in port controls and cushions for superior speed and deceleration control GRR Gripper Narrow width and long travel Rugged design withstands high impact and shock loads Three large diameter jaw guides provide low jaw defl ection and high moment capacities Rack and pinion jaw synchronization with minimal backlash TC fl uoropolymer composite guide shaft bushings Optional Rodlok locks the jaws mechanically in a stationary position for part retention. 5 million cycles minimum rated life with standard seals 5

Machine Loading & Unloading 90 Swivel Unit For this solution, PHD provides the complete tooling and mounting using two GRR250 grippers. Modular design GRR x250-H47 Previously, the customer was using a design that needed to be replaced completely in case of failure of certain parts due to crash. GRR x250-H47 RID NB Rotary Gripper This GRR gripper is mounted directly to the z-axis of the gantry robot for loading and unloading. The rim is machined from one side and turned using PHD s RID rotary actuator and then machined from the other side. This also allows the chips to fall out and all remaining chips are blown out using compressed air. This solution is cost effective to the customer, since an additional robot/gantry axis is not required. Custom Tooling GRR x350-H47 Palletising / De-Palletising 14" Rim Twin Gripper This complete and simple gripper design is used for palletising and de-palletising the rims varying in size from 14" to 22". In between different manufacturing processes (casting, machining, heat treatment), the rims are stored on pallets. The rims are gripped in pairs from the conveyor and placed on pallets and vice versa. This allows either faster throughput or less palletising stations to reduce costs. 22" Rim To accomplish this, the GRRx350 with the longest jaw travel is used (0)

GRR x350-H47 Alignment Gripper In this unique application, the GRR is used for aligning the rim. The raw cast rim arrives on a conveyor. The rim is then gripped and rotated about its principle axis to fi nd the correct position. This is done by a vision system. The rim needs to be positioned within 1 mm of accuracy. Finally, the rim is marked from the inside using a needle marker. The high repeatability helped the customer with accuracy problems. The low weight and robust design also helped in reducing weight and enhancing the life time dramatically. GRR x350-H47 GUARDIAN Patent Pending GRIPPER Design Enhancements: 75% higher moment capacity 55% higher grip force 25% higher speed 10% lower weight Additional accessories Continuous feedback jaw position sensor Extensive engineering analysis and testing assure performance. Extensive life time testing assures PHD s high quality. Finite Element Stress Analysis Plot Life Testing of Design (0)
