Economic sustainability Low costs (purchase, insurance, maintenance) No restrictions in urban areas Sustainable (congestion, emissions, noise) Client perception/image Personnel (no driver license needed, improved health, other type of employees) Simpler infrastructure needed Loading capacity (weight, volume) Limited range Inclusion in logistical process Weather influences Dependent on physical fitness of employees

Policies Policies to promote use of e-bikes: Reduced emission zones Time windows for freight vehicles Appropriate bicycle infrastructure (bicycle lanes (also suitable for cargo-bikes), parkings, charging stations, ) Fiscal incentives and subsidies Promotion campaigns (including testing of e- (cargo)bikes)

Smarter travelling, smarter working in the Groningen-Assen region Iduna Jongsma Marketeer Taskforce Mobility management

Travel & Work Smarter Groninge-Assen Region Groningen-Assen Region: 12 municipalities & 2 provinces have been cooperating since Regional programmes: * Housing * Industrial estates & Economy * Accessibility * RegioPark (nature parks and landscape parks)

Reasons why programme Mobility Management - Resolve urban bottlenecks - Financial and social costs getting out of hand - Accessibility, more and more of a problem: - 80% of the employees in Groningen/Assen travel from outside of the cities - 2/3 of them travel by car The next few years, massive construction works are planned on the roads of the Groningen-Assen region, such as on the East and South Ring of Groningen, on the main routes A7 / A28, and at the junction of Assen-South. 10/02/2014

Travel & Work Smarter Programme Accessibility Mobility Management focus commuting - different means of transport - different travel times - no commuting (working at home, online meetings etc.) where possible, with links to business traffic - e- company bike - e-cargo bike (freight) structural and sustainable behavior

Travel & Work Smarter Common goal & Results Common goal Reduction of kilometres driven by cars in rush hour: - 10% employers - 5% region Results in a nutshell More than 30 participating companies More than employees 17% reduction of car use in rush hour

Travel & Work Smarter e-cargo bike target group BESTFACT - 'implementation project' small and medium businesses (MKB) Groningen-Assen region 1-5 employees Issues Costs you have to choose between an e-cargo-bike and a car -> one investment is possible replacing one car out of ten is easier Parking lodging of the e-cargo bike (car you can park outside) Hard to reach are busy surviving, other important matters

Travel & Work Smarter - Preparations before launch e-cargo bike Free trial To buy an e-cargo for free trial Webpage Try before you buy Buy research announcement Webpage Buy and receive Euro 800,-

Travel & Work Smarter - Evaluation approach - goal 10 companies will buy and use their e-cargo-bike in their normal business practices for a period of months co-operate in evaluation process of the use of the e-cargo-bike (paid afterwards) Evaluation topics Technical performance (battery, breakdowns, impact of weather) Logistics performance (how does the e-cargo-bike perform in the logistics process? Does the e-cargo-bike put pressure on other parts of the logistics process?) Economic performance (operating costs, investment costs, savings compared to traditional forms of transport (car, van, bicycle)) Human/ergonomic aspects (role of women, health of employee, weather conditions) Environmental performance (reduction of CO2 and other emissions compared to traditional forms of transport)

Background Travel & Work Smarter The Groningen-Assen Region Mobility Management advises, provides information and connects Accessibility is vitally important for our economic growth. Significant efforts to improve accessibility by car, bicycle and improve public transport are intended to keep the region accessible, and especially the cities of Groningen and Assen. Examples are the doubling of the N33, Assen Zuid, the FlorijnAs, the Ring van Groningen (including the south Ring Road), RegioTram and the development of P+R sites. There must be enough facilities if we want to achieve this. We collaborate on this with other parties. Government and business sector hand-in-hand The business sector and authorities involved in the Groningen-Assen Region have signed an agreement concerning Mobility management. The aim of the agreement is the reduction of car use by five percent in rush hour. We set up the Mobility management programme to achieve this. What is mobility management? Mobility management is organising a smarter way of travelling and working. The traveller is stimulated to use alternatives like the bicycle, public transport, use of P+R, or to telecommuting. The requirements and wishes of people who are moving are the central focus, and it all revolves around tailor-made solutions. Governments, employers, crowd pullers and providers of mobility services jointly determine the conditions under which travellers can make smart choices. There will be many more good examples and initiatives; you can find more information about them on the website Travel & Work Smarter. Do you have any questions about mobility? Contact us!
