Malta Maritime Forum Set up October 2015 MISSION: The mission of the MMF is to serve as a common platform for those Malta based entities who are involved in the maritime, logistical and transport sector in Malta. This platform will facilitate communication between the various sectors as well as with Government to assist and promote the development of this industry in general.

The MMF is a non-governmental organisation, operated on a non-profit basis and in accordance with the provisions of article 38 of the Voluntary Organisations Act (Cap.492 of the Laws of Malta). VO/1244 The Forum is now undertaking the process to register itself as a Legal Entity.

OBJECTIVES: To promote the interests of the Maltese maritime sector; To assist in the development of new maritime activities; To promote research, education and training within the Maltese maritime sector; To act as a constituted body so as to consult and be consulted by government in the development of public policies that can have a bearing on the Maltese maritime sector.

EMISSION FREE ELECTRIC FERRIES WITH AUTOMATED SHORE SIDE CHARGING STATION Innovative ABB have managed to supply the complete power and propulsion system for two HH Ferries Group Vessels to become the world s larges emissionfree electric ferries. The innovative system Increases efficiency of battery charging, reduces Safety risk on HH Ferries route between Helsingor Denmark and Helsingborg Sweden. The modernizations utilize turnkey ABB solutions including batteries, an energy storage control system and Onboard DC Grid technology. At both ends of the route ABB have supplied the first automated shore side charging stations an ABB industrial robot, to optimize the connection time and therefore maximise the charging period.

Hybrid technology Mechanic and electric power work together in the propulsion train, optimising the propulsion efficiency for ships with a flexible power demand. The combination of mechanical power, delivered by diesel engines, and electrical power, provided by electrical motors, delivers propulsion power, which assures the ship a broad operational capability, providing the right amount of power and torque to the propeller in each operation mode.

Silicon Paint Silicon Paint application to avoid slimy hulls and marine growths hence more friction and in turns more consumption (attention as this application depends on the trade nature of the vessel and its performance speed).

Application of silicone paint Below the basics for operator to be taken into account during silicone application: - Hull cleaning: during different phases the cleaning process is essential, suitable protection should be foreseen to ensure that no dust or debris is allowed to contaminate the prepared surfaces on the hull - Behavior conditions: should be avoided rain during silicone application. Ambient humidity and relative hull dew point should be carefully monitored. - To be avoided if possible to apply silicone treatment during nightime - The thickness of the coating application in each phase should be controlled. 21

Results on Ro-Pax vessels 22

Installation of appendices in way of the stern area and in the streamline of the propeller: this appendice or duct is an energy-saving device developed for full-form slower ships enabling either significant power savings at a given speed or, alternatively, the vessel to travel faster at a given power level

LNG fuelled engine CMA CGM goes for green option with LNG-fuelled 22,000 teu boxships in world first Update: CMA CGM's decision to use LNG rather than conventional fuel for its new buildings could add about $17m to the price of each ship, but line expects running costs to be comparable Saadé: By choosing LNG, CMA CGM confirms its ambition to be a leading force in the industry in environmental protection. CMA CGM has confirmed that the nine 22,000 teu ships it has on order will be fuelled by liquefied natural gas, in an industry first.

The High-tech Automated systems that allow the full control of the vessel during navigation and maneuvering and assess consumption of fuel according to the specification of the vessel. The installation of the state of the art Scrubber systems, and hybrid scrubber system solutions to remove SOx from the exhaust. This provides a flexibility of operation in low alkaline waters, as well as the open ocean. There are also the Research and Development of various systems going on with some of them already tested and established such as Ballast Water Management Systems, Incinerators, Slop treatment plants, etc

When setting up the FORUM in 2015 we had emphasized the need of academic support for the professional development of the industry. Contacts were established and meetings held at the University. Our objective is to continue to encourage the academia to integrate with the industry on two fronts: Developing and supporting academic courses relevant to the industry engineering, economic, IT. Assisting through practical research in areas which can help improve, efficiency, environment and professionalism. Collaboration with other universities and maritime entities such as Classification Societies can help Malta to develop its stature in the Maritime research.
