Successful Open House at RIMA-SYSTEM! Shortly before DRUPA 2008, RIMA- SYSTEM invited friends, dealers and partners to an open house to discuss future trends of Post Press and current topics and issues around web printing. During two days, two print site visits demonstrated the successful installation of innovative solutions and allowed for discussion with satisfied RIMA-SYSTEM customers. The visits left the impression how an optimal Post Press system can be realized and how the right equipment with a high degree of automation ensures high quality production. Raise the curtain was the motto during the RIMA-SYSTEM factory tour. The participants had the chance to take an exclusive look at the newest products. Besides the RS 610 log stacker, the new RS 120 high-speed blocking unit and the new RS 831 rotary trimming line with electrical format adjustment were presented. Another hot topic was the growing demand for digital workflow solutions at press and post press level; the goal is that press and post press receive all production orders electronically via the company network. With PPMS (Post Press Management System) RIMA-SYSTEM presented a complete scenario for the digital order processing in the Post Press area. Each order will have a digital Job Ticket with all necessary information for the processing of this specific order. PPMS is a great tool for modern printers who realize that significant productivity improvements can be achieved by optimizing the workflow. Highly automated sectors like the car, chip and electronic industries are successfully working with digital workflow. It is the backbone of many manufacturing plants and without Job Ticket our cars would most probably come late, in the wrong color, with a smaller engine and cost double what we pay today. With this Open House RIMA-SYSTEM renewed its commitment to high quality Post Press and showed that they are a strong and stable partner for all web printers an important message for all participants who are facing the challenges of a very competitive market where several companies - customers as well as competitors - are facing difficult times. After two interesting days with plant visits, a factory tour, presentations and discussions, all participants headed home with the confidence of having a strong partner who will also in future be able to develop new products and continue to supply innovative but reliable solutions. The next highlight will be the DRUPA booth of RIMA-SYSTEM with the world first presentation of the RS 500 high speed palletizer.

RS TCC Total Copy Control for ZMR-presses Increasing production expenses due to increasing operating costs and cost-intensive downtimes are well-known challenges in the printing industry. Often the length of make-ready and downtime is disproportionate to the overall run length, especially in the case of short run environments. As a result, printers are looking for solutions to minimize the cost of change-over downtimes. Zero-Make-Ready (ZMR) presses have the advantage that no expensive change-over downtime is needed. The change of printing plates occurs during the current production without stopping the web press. This advantage can only be realized if the Post Press system is able to fulfill the demands of ZMR web presses. With the new RS 610 TCC, RIMA-SYSTEM successfully introduced a ZMR-optimized log stacker which features accurate product separation and automated log length calculation, resulting in a truly innovative log building Key Features specially designed for A4 format easy set-up & operation, optimized ergonomics remote access for diagnostics, maintenance and software updates well-suited for zero-make-ready presses (book & short-run applications) accurate product separation and automatic log length calculation (option) ready for digital workflow (PPMS & Job Ticket) technology. Depending on the run length the separation technique of the RS 610 includes the real-time log length calculation for the last logs of every run. As a result of this innovative technology, there will be no odd-length of the last log in a run. Cost-prohibitive overproduction or manual handling of logs that under-run the minimal log size will no longer be an issue. The RS 610 is based on the proven technology of the RS 600 but is specially designed for A4 format. Advantages like optimized ergonomics, ease of operation and low operating expenses were adopted from the RS 600. An intelligent press interface enables the communication between web press and log stacker. Thanks to a remote access the RS 610 is ready for remote diagnostics and maintenance as well as regular software-updates. To achieve maximum performance the RS 610 should be combined with the RS 400 palletizing robot or the RS 655 log palletizer.

RIMA-SYSTEM - No. 1 partner for US Post Press automation RIMA-SYSTEM is the fastest growing Post Press company in the States. While most suppliers are facing very difficult times with an uncertain future, RIMA-SYSTEM has continuously grown its market share. In the last 12 months RIMA-SYSTEM has commissioned 8 complete Post Press systems Automatic, trouble free palletizing of loose lifts - RIMA-SYSTEM robots have proven to be the superior solution for this application and stability of the palletizing process have been named as key factors for the decision making process. RIMA-SYSTEM robot solutions are significantly outperforming the competition. Besides these large installations, more and more small and medium printers have carefully evaluated the technical alternatives and finally decided for a RIMA-SYSTEM solution. Four shingled streams are transported via overhead to the stacking area leaving the floor space free including 8 palletizing robots in the States, more than any of its competitors. Nahan Printing, Brown Woodstock, RRD Lancaster and Danville, Quebecor St. Cloud - all these printers have chosen RIMA-SYSTEM as their preferred Post Press supplier. Nearly all of the latest high-speed and highvolume projects which include robotic palletizing have been awarded to RIMA-SYSTEM. Intelligent configurations, superior stacking quality and the performance An intelligent layout with a two-way bundle conveyor allows automatic palletizing and easy pickup of bundles for sample pallets.

RS 655 Space-saving log palletizer... in the spotlight Cost-effectiveness, flexibility and intuitive operation are the demands on modern log palletizers. Forwardthinking printing plants ask for fully automated palletizing solutions to replace time and cost intensive semiautomated palletizing. Because of decreasing cycle times the finished logs have to be placed quickly but still precisely onto the pallets. Flexibility regarding packing patterns and an intuitive operator interface is as important as an easily accessible palletizing area. RIMA-SYSTEM presents the new RS 655 palletizing robot which is Key Features specially designed for the new RS 610 compact but open design easy pick-up of full pallets well-suited for low ceilings optional 90 /180 log rotation specially designed for installation behind the RS 610 log stacker. The compact but open design is one of the outstanding features. Instead of a mounted iron grid, the palletizing area is secured by safety light barriers. This allows for a better visual monitoring of the palletizing process, consumes less space and simplifies the pick-up of full pallets. Furthermore, the RS 655 with its new vertical axis technology is well-suited for operation in production rooms with low ceilings. The gripper runs between two permanently mounted slide rails, so that no machine parts move beyond the upper outline of the palletizer. The RS 655 is operated via an intuitive operator panel. The RS 655 can be upgraded with specific options, which include the 90 (left/right) and 180 rotation of the logs to ensure a fast and easy subsequent processing on perfect binders and saddle stitchers the integration of an automated slip sheet feeder to increase the stability of the pallets the outstanding possibility of putting two logs, each with a length of 600 mm, together end to end onto the pallet Thanks to innovative technology, space-saving construction and additional options the RS 655 sets new standards and is the first choice for efficient and reliable log palletizing. 10 RS 831 Rotary trimming line with electrical adjustment Every day, millions of products run through trimming lines for single, two, or three-sidetrimming. In modern trimming applications a precise cut is as important as low operating costs. Just as critical is a fast and easy adjustment of the trimmers to avoid expensive set-up times, especially in case of frequently changing formats. RIMA-SYSTEM is proud to present the new RS 831, an innovative all-in-one rotary trimming line based on the proven technology of the RS 830 and designed to fulfill all demands of trimming applications. Two trimming units and a bumpturn are mounted on a stable, movable frame for flexible operation behind variable delivery scenarios. The complete encapsulation of the Key Features two trimming units and one bumpturn on a stable, movable frame electrical format adjustment (central & on machine) complete encapsulation for reduced noise Hexbrator Technology, Multi-Knife-Technology, Zero-Gap-Adjustment integrated knife cooling for unique trimming quality ready for digital workflow (PPMS & Job Ticket) trimming units ensures a more quiet operation. Proven features like infeeds with Hexbrator Technology, Multi-Knife-Technology, integrated knife cooling and Zero Gap Adjustment guarantee a precise cut, a perfect run-out and a long edge life. The RS 831 can be delivered as a trimming line with electrical adjustment and a digital workflow interface or as a line with manual adjustments. In the automatic version the RS 831 will be set up via a graphical display at the machine or centrally through the download of the set-up parameters via Job Ticket. The automated adjustment of complete Post Press systems minimizes change-over costs, reproduces setting data of periodic orders and documents status information like quantities and times of current and finished production. For future-oriented printing plants with frequent format changes, the RS 831 with electrical format adjustment is the perfect solution for reliable and cost-effective trimming. 10

Key Features specially designed for A4 format up to 30 bpm (~ 2s per cycle) fully synchronized with RS 32/ RS 36 compact design with shorter infeed shorter outfeed with safety light barrier ready for digital workflow (PPMS & Job Ticket) RS 120 Compact & shorter cycle times Stacking is a central and important process of Post Press systems. Compensating stackers convert the shingled stream into loose stacks for further downstream processing and palletizing. Depending on the type of paper, fold, ink coverage and in-line finishing in the folder (stitched or glued), the loose stacks delivered by the compensating stackers can be more or less stable. Especially slippery and stitched products are a challenge for downstream processing since the layers tend to slide against each other with the potential risk of misaligned bundles. A safe and automated stack handling behind the stacker is only achievable with well-aligned, stable and bricklike stacks. Blocking units minimize the risk of jams and stoppages during stack handling by mechanically compressing and electrostatically charging the stacks which holds the compressed stacks together. By stabilizing the stacks, the blocking unit increases process stability and thereby the efficiency and performance of the whole Post Press system. With the new RS 120 RIMA-SYSTEM presents a blocking unit which is based on proven technology in combination with innovative features. The new blocking unit is specially designed for A4 format and has shorter cycle times. Instead of 3 seconds per cycle, the RS 120 compresses, electrostatically charges and ejects stacks in about 2 seconds.* These shorter cycle times ensure that the RS 120 is ready for high speed and high volume environments. The faster throughput results mainly from the compact construction and the specialization on A4 format. The infeed was shortened which also results in less required space in the press room. In addition, the length of the guard was shortened and partially replaced by a light barrier. The RS 120 blocking unit shows best performance when combined with an RS 32 or RS 36 high speed stacker. In this case customers take advantage of the fact that the PLCs of both machines are electronically linked and the operations between stacker and blocking unit are fully synchronized. The innovative technology and the space-saving construction ensure a maximum process stability and efficiency. Thanks to state-of-the-art electronic modules the RS 120 is ready for digital workflow and is well-suited for future production demands. * depending on products News Ticker - Nahan Printing Inc. wins six top awards of IAPHC! 18 9000 sold stackers... and still no end in sight! With this amount of sold units RIMA-SYSTEM outperforms all of its competitors. This impressive installed machine base demonstrates RIMA-SYSTEM s strength in both the press and bindery stacker environments. In fact, several bindery line manufacturers integrate RS 10, RS 11, RS 14 or RS 33 stackers at the end of their saddle stitchers and perfect binders. A good example is the new RS 14 bindery stacker which has become the standard solution for the Heidelberg ST 400 / ST 450 lines in the States. On the pressroom side, the RS 32 and RS 36 cover the highend / high-speed markets while the RS 25 - the most sold stacker ever successfully covers the small and medium presses. Just in time for drupa, RIMA-SYSTEM presents a reorganized stacker family with several new models: The RS 2x line meets all requirements for small and medium presses, in coldset and in commercial printing. The RS 3x line addresses the high-volume market and will be the perfect solution for all high-speed presses. In addition, a special inserter stacker will fit the small and medium inserting market. 20 PPMS & Job Ticket Digital workflow in Post Press Systems 20 RIMA-SYSTEM takes up the challenge of digital workflow by the implementation of the so called Job Ticket, which is based on the CIP4-Standard and contains all relevant order data for the processing of this specific order. The goal is that press and Post Press system receive all production orders electronically via the company network. This includes static order data like customer and product information, dynamic information like number of products, delivery date, etc. as well as all set-up parameters for presetting the different machines. These set-up parameters consist of data like the untrimmed product size (e.g. 240 x 315mm), the specification of the trimming (e.g. 5 mm on each side) and the stacking (e.g. bundles of 100 copies with 2 layers of 50) as well as the downstream processing (e.g. strapped, unstrapped, etc.). The Job Ticket is administered by the PPMS (Post Press Management System) which closes the gap between the central MIS/ERP system, the plant floor level with the pressroom supervisors and the shop floor level with the machines and their operators. The parameters are downloaded to the PLC of every machine, so that time- and costintensive manual adjustments are reduced by an electrical presetting. Once the run starts, the operator can still fine-tune the adjustments and upload the final settings to the central PPMS computer were they are stored for the next run of the same product. PPMS also includes modules for on-line order monitoring including real-time calculation of good product and waste, expected end of run and efficiency of the current job. In addition, modules for the post order analysis of good product and waste count, time consumption and time analysis, fault messages including duration and frequency are valuable tools for active production controlling. Remote maintenance and software-updates via modem/isdn/ DSL are also guaranteed through the application of state-of-the-art electronic modules. PPMS is a great tool for modern printers who realize that significant productivity improvements can be achieved by optimizing the workflow. In comparison to conventional solutions and thanks to advantages in controlling, analysis and documentation, the digital Post Press system from RIMA-SYSTEM will give future-oriented printers a competitive edge.

We did it again! In times of fast changing information the internet has become one of the most important, if not THE most important communication and information medium. Searching for and retrieving information, getting in contact with customers and suppliers, providing contact information and exchanging large data volume are only a few of the countless possibilities of the worldwide web. Therefore, a well-structured internet presence with latest news is one of the most important preconditions of a successful communication policy of international companies. At drupa 2004 RIMA-SYSTEM launched its new website. Fast loading times, clear & simple navigation, interesting and up to date information - goals we achieved with the 2004 relaunch. During the last years the RIMA-SYS- TEM webpage has been ranked among the top sites by Deutscher Drucker. Now four years later it is time for the next step in internet presence. We will take advantage of the latest technology and base the new internet presence on a flexible Content Management System. Information will be easy to customize and always up to date. The clear main structure of the webpage is conserved during re-design but will be enhanced with an optimized menu navigation. In addition, the new link structure will come along with a more modern layout which will be part of a relaunch of the complete communication presence. The new web page is structured into seven main sections. The menu item Company contains all general information about RIMA-SYSTEM, the customers and current vacancies. News, trade shows and press releases will be found in the news section. Information about products and solutions are located under menu item Products, which also contains pictures and application examples that can be downloaded as a pdf-file. Information about current and past projects will be found under menu item Projects. All this information and additional downloadable data are also listed in the Download -section. The implementation of the new menu item Service enables customers to request spare part equipment via web form 24 hours per day. The request will be directed to the service staff who will deal with the order without any delay. General information can still be requested via the web form in the Contact -section which also contains all contact addresses of RIMA-SYSTEM s global dealers. In the first instance the web page will be available in English and German, additional languages will be implemented later. Comments and suggestions on the re-design of the webpage are welcome to ensure an optimized supply of information for all our online-visitors. 21

High automated Post Press cph The growing demand for flyers and inserts in East European countries within the last few years has resulted in strong competition in web offset markets. Several markets like Poland and Hungary are already saturated while other East European markets e.g. Rumania still promise a strong growth potential. One enterprise that early seized the chance of this growth potential and established itself in the relevant markets is the Goldmann AG from Tulln in Austria. 23 Finished products are turned into neat stacks by the RS 36 indexing stacker. Thanks to an intelligent servo-pusher system, the bundles are ejected safely into the direct-coupled RS 110 blocking unit which compresses and electrostatically charges the stacks. The stacks can also be single- or cross-strapped before they are transported to the RS 400 palletizing robots. Logs and stacks are picked up by the RS 400 palletizing robot which smoothly puts them onto the automatically delivered pallets at maximum speed. To further stabilize the pallets, the robot can place slip sheets on each layer, making the palletizing process fully automated. Another highlight is the implementation of digital workflow. PPMS- Software and JOB TICKET enable the controlling of all set-up data and are responsible for the transmission of data and the feedback of machines. This allows a fast and easy electrical adjustment of the whole Post Press system depending on actual production. Time-consuming and expensive manual adjustments are significantly reduced. In addition, the production lines of the complete Post Press system are monitored and visualized via PATHFINDER-Software. In case of malfunction, the software allows the automatical re-direction of all production to back-up lines. The high degree of automation and latest hardware and software ensure fast and efficient finishing and increases production capacity to meet the growing demand of new and emerging markets.
