Leading truck manufacturer required for inventory and tracking of truck chassis, a RFID-based PARKING MANAGEMENT AND TRACKING SYSTEM Efficient management of storage and dispatch of trucks Exact location in real-time of any truck chassis parked in a large parking area Instant and accurate verification and count of trucks Prevention of unauthorized movement from premises TECHNOLOGY Solution: EPC Gen2 compliant inventory and parking management solution Tag Type: Metallica UHF Passive Reader/Antenna: Xtenna Xtenna Proximity HandyScanna Method: Multiple Tracking via Integrated Reader/Antenna modules Single Tracking via hand-held Integration Platform: RFID Middleware: Xtenna WebToolkit Xtenna Studio Application: Essen RFID s Parking & Inventory Management System Database: Oracle Tag Manufacturer/Supplier: Essen RFID, with US based chip inlay Reader/Antenna Manufacturer: Essen RFID, with US based module INSIDE: Key Requirements Solution Implementation Working Benefits Links Systems Integrator: Essen RFID For further details contact: Essen RFID 24-B, Jolly Maker II Nariman Point Mumbai India

KEY REQUIREMENTS: Ashok Leyland is a commercial vehicle manufacturing company based in Chennai. It is one of India s leading manufacturers of commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses, as well as emergency and military vehicles. The company needed to manage the inventory and tracking of truck chassis at its Regional Sales Offices and find the exact location of each truck chassis when parked in a large area amongst multiple chassis models. It also needed an accurate real-time chassis inventory count from its various RSO yards and an efficient error-free dispatch of truck chassis on request from sales. Main challenges in implementation: Maintaining an automated record of truck chassis parked in its parking lots. Prompt location of any particular truck chassis within a huge parking lot. Sending an immediate security alert if unauthorized truck chassis attempts to leave the parking area. SOLUTION: Essen RFID offered a comprehensive solution comprising of Parking Management and Truck Inventory Management for the company s RSO yards. This technology enables efficient management of truck inventory at the parking lot and prompt identification of truck chassis within the parking area, through RFID tagging and tracking. IMPLEMENTATION: Xtenna RFID Antenna-Readers are installed, one each for the Entry and Exit gates of the parking area. A METALLICA Tag is attached to the side of each vehicle chassis. The tag is also affixed to the ground at each parking slot. The tags are registered using an Xtenna Proximity Antenna-Reader, while a handheld HandyScanna is used to assign each vehicle to a particular parking slot. This data is updated by HandyScanna via GPS to the central database server which uses Oracle. WORKING: The system has the following main modules: Assigning tag to parking slot Assigning tag to truck chassis Assigning each truck chassis to its parking slot using HandyScanna 2

Process Flow: 1. A truck arrives at the RSO yard. 2. The operator registers a METALLICA tag using Xtenna Proximity and assigns it to the truck. The truck is then directed to the parking lot. 3. A message is sent to the supervisor on his HandyScanna. 4. The truck arrives and is parked at the designated parking lot. 5. The supervisor using his HandyScanna scans the RFID tag on the truck and the ground location tag and allocates the parking slot. 3

6. He then maps the location filled with the Tag Code given to the truck. 7. HandyScanna sends this information via GPRS to the central database. 8. The database updates the Oracle table with the truck chassis number data. 9. When an order for a particular truck chassis number arrives, then it instructs the system to dispatch the truck. 10. The truck driver drives the truck out of the RSO yard towards the Exit gate. 11. The Xtenna mounted at the Exit detects and validates the tag on the truck. 12. This updates the parking slot as empty in the database. 13. The tag is then detatched from the truck chassis at the Exit gate. This tag and the truck are de-assigned automatically and updated in the database. The truck is then allowed to leave. 14. If any unauthorized truck attempts to leave through the Exit gate then the tag ID of that truck is matched with the confirmed order. If there is no match then an alarm is sounded and the signal light at the gate stays red. 4

BENEFITS: Automated system minimizes manual entries in record-keeping, making search and maintenance easy and efficient. Intelligent management reports make information readily available on hand. Efficient management of parking yards. Quickly finds required chassis numbers in the parking lot enabling prompt dispatch of orders. Only truck chassis of confirmed orders can leave the parking area. Unconfirmed truck approaching the Exit gate results in alarm being sounded, making the system fool-proof and avoiding wrong dispatch. LINKS: Hardware: Tags: Software: Reference Example: 5
