These instructions provide you with important information and data you need to ensure proper functioning of the sensor and reduce maintenance costs. Following these instructions will help you to operate the sensor more easily and efficiently, allowing you to achieve reliable measuring results. 1 Introduction These instructions provide you with information on using, installing, operating, and maintaining the sensor. The sensor described here is usually operated using a control device / measuring transducer. For this reason, it is important to familiarize yourself with the proper operation of the control device / measuring transducer in order to ensure successful operation of the sensor. In particular, before using the device for new applications in the area of research and development, we recommend first contacting us to discuss the application in question. 1.1 Using this manual Pay particular attention to all special information and warnings. Information of this type is set apart from the rest of the text and labeled with the appropriate symbols (see example on left). This information provides you with useful tips and helps you to avoid improper use of the device. 1.2 Using the sensor Procedures such as proper transportation, storage, installation, operation and maintenance of the product are vital for ensuring correct and safe operation. Using the sensor in a way that is not described in these instructions can pose serious risks for the user. In addition, improper use of the equipment renders the device warranty null and void. 1.3 Warranty information The contents of this instruction manual do not constitute part of a past or existing agreement, promise, or legal relationship nor are they intended to modify these. All obligations of HACH LANGE GmbH originate from the purchase contract in question, the contents of which also include the full and exclusively valid warranty provisions. 4 2 Description The sensor is composed of two conductive electrodes. The electrodes are insulated from one another and arranged in a specific geometric pattern. The electrodes determine the cell constant. An alternating current is applied to the electrodes. The flow of the current is a measurement of the conductivity of the solution. Since the measuring results are affected by the temperature of the solution, the measurement must be made for a particular reference temperature (generally 25 C/77 F) so that the results can be compared. A Pt100 temperature probe is integrated into the sensor. 3 Installation 3.1 Installing the sensor Installation in a pipe When installing the sensor in a pipe, it is important to make sure that the inner electrode is completely immersed in the medium conducted through the pipe. The illustration on the left shows various examples of how the sensor can be installed in a pipe. The arrows indicate the direction in which the medium in the pipe is flowing. The letters in the illustration signify the following: A) Excellent positioning of the sensor, optimum contact with the flowing medium, and optimum rate of medium replenishment on the electrode surface. B) Possible positioning of the sensor, sufficient contact with the flowing medium, and sufficient rate of medium replenishment on the electrode surface. C) Poor positioning of the sensor. The electrodes have only partial contact with the flowing medium and the transmitted conductivity value is insufficient Installation in a continuous-flow vessel It is possible to install the sensor in a continuous-flow vessel (7MA2000-8PX1). For this type of installation, it is important to ensure a minimum flow rate of 20 l/h (5 ¼ USGal/h) (the optimum flow rate is 60 l/h, 15 ¾ USGal/h) in order to avoid the creation of bubbles on the surface of the probe. 2EL conductivity sensor 7MA2000-8P_0 3

The electrodes have only partial contact with the flowing medium and the transmitted conductivity value is insufficient. 3.2 Connecting the cable When connecting the cable to the plug, it is important to make sure that there is no moisture in the plug and that no moisture can form in the plug. Connect the sensor cable to the measuring transducer as specified in the connection table. 6 4 Setup and operation The sensor is always operated using a SIPAN 32 or SIPAN 34 measuring transducer. For this reason, it is important to follow the operating instructions provided for these devices to ensure proper functioning of the sensor. 4.1 Checking / specifying the cell constant The cell constant is a specific sensor value required for converting the measured resistance value into a conductivity value. To check the cell constant, you must use the value specified on the sensor. This value was calculated with an accuracy deviation of less than 2% according to ASTM N 1125 and ISO 7888 standards. The cell constant is specified in the measuring transducer menu. 4.2 Calibrating for the first time Temperature compensation For these sensors, the integrated temperature sensor is fitted as a two-wire connection. In this arrangement, the measured value is affected by the resistance of the sensor cable. To compensate for the cable resistance, the temperature must be calibrated before startup. To do this, proceed as follows: 1. Immerse the sensor for approx. ten minutes in a solution (e.g. distilled water) heated to room temperature. 2. Measure the temperature of the solution using a second calibrated thermometer having a resolution of 0.1 C/0.18 F or better. 3. Set the SIPAN measuring transducer to operating mode 'Calibrate' (CAL). 4. Enter the temperature shown on the thermometer as the calibration value on the SIPAN measuring transducer. For detailed information on temperature compensation, please refer to the instruction manual of the SIPAN measuring transducer you are using Conductivity To calibrate the conductivity, please read the relevant sections of the measuring transducer instruction manuals. 4.3 Explosion Protection The sensor is defined as standard electrical equipment as per EN 50020, Section 5.4. The only source of heat is the integrated Pt100 temperature probe, which is defined as a small component as per EN 50020, Table 3. As a result, the sensor can be operated under a maximum operating temperature of 125 C/257 F in temperature class T4. 2EL conductivity sensor 7MA2000-8P_0 5

7 5 Servicing and maintenance The conductivity sensors are extremely reliable and only require a minimum amount of calibration. 5.1 Measuring errors If you detect any measuring errors, we recommend first checking the following: A) Cable connections B) Measuring transducer settings C) Probe (Pt100 and electrodes). The following illustration shows the correct position of the connections: Electrodes Pt100: Measure the resistance of the Pt100 at the point of connection and compare the level of resistance with the (correct) values shown in the following table: Temperature in C Temperature in F Conductivity in Ω Electrodes: Check the insulation between the two electrodes (if the sensor is dry and exposed to air: resistance R = ). 5.2 Cleaning Insulating deposits (e.g. calcium deposits or oil film) formed on the electrodes during operation can affect the measuring results. If this occurs, you must clean the sensor. In most cases, you can clean the sensor using hot water and an acidic cleaning agent. Oil films can usually be removed using ethyl alcohol or propyl alcohol. Residue from solutions containing bacteria or algae should be removed using a cleaning agent containing chlorine. Deposits of metallic hydroxide must be treated with 20% nitric acid (in a ten-minute immersion bath). After cleaning the sensor, we recommend checking the calibration. 6 2EL conductivity sensor 7MA2000-8P_0
