Agenda Nuclear Projects as Megaprojects Social challenges and their consequences Case studies Guidelines to manage the NDPs social challenges Conclusions and Q&A Managing Social Challenges in the Nuclear Industry: A responsible approach towards better performance International Journal of Project Management, in press. 2

Construction-Megaprojects are not new BC BC AD AD What do all these projects have in common? Huge Budget Long-time of planning/construction Great technical, economic and social challenges Poor project performance (are we sure?) Little or no considerations regarding the end of their lifecycle: Dismantling Eventual Decontamination 3

-Megaprojects are new 4

Projects as Megaprojects Nuclear Projects: are characterized by activities that range from small projects to major national multibillion projects are at least partially commissioned by governments are uncertain, complex and politically sensitive projects usually involve large numbers of stakeholders 5

Projects as Megaprojects No or little cash in-flow at the end No revenue-generating-assets are created No landmark outputs Employees work themselves out of job! NDPs are morally troublesome also from an intergenerational perspective 6

Research questions Which are the main social challenges that arise during the development of a NDP, and how do they affect NDPs? Which are the best practices to socially and ethically manage these challenges, and successfully meet the scope of the project? 7

Radioactive Material Which case studies? Which NDPs? Post-Operational Activities Dealing with existing legacy: Decontamination De-energizing Dismantling Demolition of existing infrastructure Construction of new facilities for the: Management Storage Disposal of radioactive material Site radiological assessment & environmental remediation Radioactive material management: e.g. material sorting, fuel management, waste processing, conditioning & passivation; transport, storage and/or disposal; post clean-up surveys Nuclear Projects and Programmes X X Site Restoration Projects X Operations of existing and new facilities X 8

Conclusions and Q&A NDPs are troublesome also from an intergenerational perspective It is possible to manage NDPs with an ethical and moral perspective, trough: Early planning Early engagement Avoiding surprises during the siting process My question to you: how can cultural difference can be taken into account? 21
