INTRODUCTION About VISY Port access control? The Djungle System and Solution System/Solution Orientated or Customer Orientated Why Automation? 7 P s Case Study: Port of Helsinki Discussion

VISY OY, FINLAND Founded 1994 to develop OCR technology for Finnish paper industry The upgrade of Port of Kotka access control from old system to VISY Access GATE created largest port access control system in Northern Europe ( ) Ongoing large scale project is the delivery of Visy Access GATE system to TangerMed Systems delivered for example, in Estonia, Latvia, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Malaysia, and Brazil. Almost 100% of the customers are ports, logistics facilities, terminal operators, and customs Exposición: Ponente: Área temática: 2

Port Access Control System Port Access Control System (PACS) is versatile access control and gate operating environment specially designed to terminal usage The modern PACS goes beyond just the gate area of a single terminal and can automate traffic flow throughout the entire Large variation of recognition technologies to both personnel and cargo Very high scalability Automates traffic flow with dynamic information displays, and traffic lights Controlled areas can be very large and far from control room

The Djungle PACS, Port Access Control System TOS, Terminal Operating System VBS, Vehicle Booking System GOS Gate Operating System ETC ETC ETC

Systems and Solutions The Webster dictionary definition of SYSTEM A group of interacting, interrelated, or interdependent elements forming a complex whole. The term SOLUTION has come to mean everything from the traditional way to solve a mathematical proof to a suite of efficiency-enhancing software and it is perhaps the epitome of lingual laziness (Steiner, C. The Most Painfully Annoying Business Jargon, com 16 December 2009).

System/Solution Orientated or Customer Orientated DO NOT TRY TO FIT AN EXCISTING SOLUTION INTO YOUR OPERATIONS, BUT START WITH YOUR PROCESS PLANNING WHY? ONLY YOU KNOW YOUR REAL NEEDS YOU HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE SOLUTION AND EARN MONEY WITH IT FOR MANY YEARS TO COME

Why Automation? Reduce operating expenses Optimize safety and security Increase throughput capacity Give effect to regulations and trends So how should we manage design, procurement and implementation?

7 P s Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pitifully Poor Performance.

Case: Port of Helsinki New harbor center of Helsinki. Terminals from city center moved to Vuosaari Greenfield project. Construction work started 2003 Live 11/2008 Upon start-up traffic vehicles per day Container quays 2 x 750 meters, 15 RoRo berths Operators are Finnsteve, Steveco, and Multi-Link Terminals Port authority, Customs, and all the operators use Visy solutions

Case: Port of Helsinki Multioperator port visit: a truck visits different operators during the same visit through one gate Even after the harbor main gate area there are gates with multioperator traffic Maintenance traffic through several different gate and control areas Customs visits Space limitations RoRo and container traffic use the same lanes and gates Weight and guest containers Several parties make both automated and manual access permits
