NORTH RAIL TERMINAL. THE FUTURE OF INTERMODAL RAIL IS HERE. Intermodal rail is now the largest tonnage sector of rail traffic in the UK, and many high street retailers are now designing their supply chain around accessibility to rail. It is a key factor when choosing a port, and is the distribution choice our customers cannot afford to overlook. NORTH RAIL TERMINAL THE FUTURE OF INTERMODAL RAIL IS HERE 1

The Port of Felixstowe is Britain s largest intermodal container rail terminal. Our throughput has more than doubled since 1997, and continues to grow. A total of 541,000 containers (11,000 a week) are expected to be moved by rail each week in The benefits of rail are clear: More economical than road As fuel prices continue to increase, so does the price of road haulage Better for the environment 72 TEUs (Twentyfoot Equivalent Units) transported via rail produce only 30% of the carbon that would be produced if they were transported by truck. Longer trains of 90 TEUs will provide even greater carbon savings Provides more control Shifting volume to rail helps control cost through the supply chain Provides more choice Enabling greater choice of haulier for the last mile as opposed to a limited choice in long haul suppliers from the Port Reduces road congestion Rail is more convenient for everyone concerned NORTH RAIL TERMINAL THE FUTURE OF INTERMODAL RAIL IS HERE 2

LEADING THE WAY IN INTERMODAL RAIL The North Rail Terminal is the latest addition to a world-class rail distribution operation at Felixstowe. The Central and South Rail Terminals have been operating at the Port of Felixstowe for some time, and already provide connections to the industrial heartlands in the Midlands and the North, and to the population centres of the South East, London and Bristol: 17 inland destinations throughout Britain 58 daily arrivals and departures Choice of operators Freightliner, GB Railfreight, DB Schenker Our North Rail Terminal will double this capacity, partly through the facility to operate longer trains but also by providing nine additional working tracks bringing to a total of 20 the Port s working tracks (more than are offered by London s busy Kings Cross Station). NORTH RAIL TERMINAL OPENING JUNE 2013 Hutchison Ports UK (HPUK) is committed to investing in rail. As a major part of the Port s expansion plans, the North Rail Terminal will future-proof the Port against increasing demand well into the future, and will help to remove 500,000 lorry movements a year from the UK s roads saving over 100,000 tonnes of carbon annually. Rail freight traffic to and from the port of Felixstowe has grown dramatically since rail privatisation 20 years ago. Demand still exceeds supply but now, with the opening of the new North Terminal at Felixstowe, the Port has again shown its commitment to working to increase rail traffic. Alongside the work being undertaken by Network Rail, and by the train operators, the Port is playing a key role in growing intermodal rail freight. I wish the port every success in this new capacity expansion project. Lord Berkeley, Chairman, Rail Freight Group NORTH RAIL TERMINAL THE FUTURE OF INTERMODAL RAIL IS HERE 3

40m STATE OF THE ART FACILITY, DESIGNED TO DELIVER The North Rail Terminal is the result of a 40million investment, co-financed by the European Union Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) programme. It has been developed with input from Freight Operating Companies as well as Network Rail and the Department for Transport (DfT), to ensure we deliver maximum benefit to our customers. INNOVATIOVE TECHNOLOGY, DESIGNED TO MAXIMISE RAIL EFFICIENCY Innovative use of Britain s only intermodal rail Traverser means the North Rail Terminal will allow standard train loads to increase from 24 to more than 30 wagons which will increase capacity by 25% alone and will enable up to 40 additional trains per day to run in each direction by the year The biggest, most advanced Liebherr intermodal rail cranes in Britain will also work across the terminal when fully developed, providing faster loading and unloading of cargoes. Further streamlining of the Port s rail operations will be made possible by the wide operational working aprons, allowing greater flexibility to discharge and load trains, and by a dedicated gate interchange system that incorporates cyclamen radiation scanning to provide security and damage checks which itself has been designed to reduce on-terminal travel distances to further improve the Port s fuel and carbon savings. carbon annually. 5 144million has been invested to improve the network THE REGION S RAIL NETWORK KEEPS GETTING BETTER Rail s obvious benefits have made it the focus of government infrastructure investment, through Network Rail. 144million has been invested to improve the network, not only allowing longer trains to run but also removing height restrictions on trains and making connections more efficient and streamlined to and from the Port of Felixstowe. Ipswich Chord, due to open in Spring 2014, will improve access to and from the Great Eastern Main Line by removing the need to transit via Ipswich Yard, enabling faster and more efficient connections and allowing the operation of longer trains too. A further 175million is planned for future improvements to the local rail infrastructure. NORTH RAIL TERMINAL THE FUTURE OF INTERMODAL RAIL IS HERE 5

As part of our commitment to improving performance and delivering faster, more frequent journeys we have been working in partnership with the UK s largest intermodal rail freight port, the Port of Felixstowe, to drive improvements in intermodal rail freight with the development of the new North Rail Terminal. The terminal is truly state of the art, and a testament to Port of Felixstowe s focus on delivering greater efficiencies through smart use of the network and a focus on longer trains that will not only benefit the rail freight industry, but every single user of Britain s rail and road networks.
