5 About Us The has over 650 members and brings together IOSH members with a shared interest in the diverse world that is Aviation involving airports, airlines, ground handlers, retailers, construction, manufacturers and engineers Through the Aviation and Aerospace Group, members can network and exchange information related to the Aviation sector, as well as helping IOSH to meet its wider aims. There are currently 17 IOSH industry sector Groups 5

6 About Us The 's committee is made up of volunteers who have specific skills, expertise and knowledge of the sector. Committee members comprise of aviation professionals including our external agencies such as the HSE, the CAA and NATS Past events and activities have included: Airside health and safety induction DVD Visits to the AAIB Development of the IOSH Managing Safely in Aviation 6

7 About Us Recent Activities and Events Rolls Royce Heritage Centre Visit and Incident Investigation Seminar March 2014 Development of a series of aircraft turnround guidance posters highlighting health and safety hazards during aircraft turnround June

8 Workshop 1 Developing an Integrated Safety Management System There is currently a wide variation in the way SMS principles are applied in the aviation and aerospace sector. Common issues include: Variations of SMS components More than one SMS in operation within the business (legacy issues) Interaction of the SMS with other management systems such as Quality and Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Diversity in scalability and scope Contrasting risk assessment methodologies particularly between aviation safety and occupational health and safety Contrasting data collection types and methods Conflicting guidance between aviation safety and occupational health and safety requirements Consider the advantages and disadvantages of integrating SMS with other management systems businesses in the aviation and aerospace sector are required to implement and maintain 8

9 Workshop 2 The benefits and challenges of a Just Culture A Just Culture has been defined as a culture in which front line operators and others are not punished for actions, omissions or decisions taken by them that are commensurate with their experience and training, but where gross negligence, wilful violations and destructive acts are not tolerated. Discuss the benefits and challenges of building a just culture within your organisation. 9
