OUTCOMES 1. produce details of components; 2. produce a cutting plan and maintain records for sheet material; 3. produce a cutting list and maintain records for solid material. CREDIT VALUE: 1 HN Credit ACCESS STATEMENT: Access to this unit is at the discretion of the centre. However it would be helpful if the candidate had completed a SQA modular programme in Machine Woodworking to SVQ level III. The unit forms part of the Advanced Certificate in Machine Woodworking and is aimed at candidates following a career in machine woodworking and receiving complementary industrial experience For further information contact: Committee and Administration Unit, SQA, Hanover House, 24 Douglas Street, Glasgow G2 7NQ. Additional copies of this unit may be purchased from SQA (Sales and Despatch section). At the time of publication, the cost is 1.50 (minimum order 5).

HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION STATEMENT OF STANDARDS UNIT NUMBER: UNIT TITLE: MACHINE WOODWORKING: COMPUTER AIDED MANUFACTURE (CAM) Acceptable performance in this unit will be the satisfactory achievement of the standards set out in this part of the specification. All sections of the statement of standards are mandatory and cannot be altered without reference to SQA. OUTCOME 1. PRODUCE DETAILS OF COMPONENTS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Interpret the given specification correctly. Input data correctly. Plot detailed piece part drawings accurately. The component list is comprehensive. RANGE STATEMENT Information sources: worksheets; drawings; specifications; sketches; software; oral or written instructions. Materials: solid timber; MDF; plywood; chipboard; veneered material; plastics; locks; hinges; handles; slides; stays; KD fittings. Component list: machined components; proprietary fittings. Equipment: computer; mouse; digitiser; printer; plotter. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Performance evidence of competence in producing: details of materials, fittings, dimensions and joints; detailed dimensioned plot of components; list showing materials, dimensions, quantity, surface finish, colour and form. 2

OUTCOME 2. PRODUCE A CUTTING PLAN AND MAINTAIN RECORDS FOR SHEET MATERIAL PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (e) Select materials appropriate to the work. Input correct data accurately. The cutting list produced is accurate. Plot a logical cutting plan. Records of stock are accurately maintained. RANGE STATEMENT Information sources: worksheets; drawings; specifications; sketches; software; oral or written instructions. Cutting lists: length; width; thickness; MDF; plywood; chipboard; plastics; grain; colour; regular shapes; irregular shapes. Stock: stock available; final stock; waste factor; cost. Equipment: computer; printer; plotter. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Performance evidence of competence under working conditions in: the input of data; producing a cutting list and plan; maintain stock records. Oral or written evidence of knowledge and understanding of: type and purpose of information sources; economic use of materials; application of sheet materials. OUTCOME 3. PRODUCE A CUTTING LIST AND MAINTAIN RECORDS FOR SOLID MATERIAL PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Interpret the requirements of a components list correctly. Input correct data accurately. The cutting list produced is accurate. Records of stock are accurately maintained. 3

RANGE STATEMENT Information sources: worksheets; drawings; specifications; sketches; software; oral or written instructions. Cutting lists: length; width; thickness; grain; hardwood; softwood. Stock: stock available; final stock; waste factor; off-cut utilisation; cost. Equipment: computer; printer; plotter. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Performance evidence of competence under working conditions in: the input of data; producing a cutting list; maintain stock records. Oral or written evidence of knowledge and understanding of: types and purpose of information sources; necessary input data. MERIT A candidate who achieves all performance criteria for all outcomes will be awarded a pass. A pass with merit may be awarded to a candidate who substantially exceeds the minimum requirements of the unit for practical competence in outcomes 1, 2 and 3 and who consistently demonstrates at least four of the following: (e) (f) logical sequencing of work; logical presentation of work; optimum specification of materials; optimum use of time and resources; high organisational ability; high motivation ASSESSMENT In order to achieve this unit, candidates are required to present sufficient evidence that they have met all the performance criteria for each outcome within the range specified. Details of these requirements are given for each outcome. The assessment instruments used should follow the general guidance offered by the SQA assessment model and an integrative approach to assessment is encouraged. (See references at the end of support notes). 4

Accurate records should be made of the assessment instruments used showing how evidence is generated for each outcome and giving marking schemes and/or checklists, etc. Records of candidates' achievements should also be kept. These records will be required for external verification. SPECIAL NEEDS Proposals to modify outcomes, range statements or agreed assessment arrangements should be discussed in the first place with the external verifier. 6 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION SUPPORT NOTES UNIT NUMBER: UNIT TITLE: MACHINE WOODWORKING: COMPUTER AIDED MANUFACTURE (CAM) SUPPORT NOTES: This part of the unit specification is offered as guidance. None of the sections of the support notes is mandatory. NOTIONAL DESIGN LENGTH: SQA allocates a notional design length to a unit on the basis of the time estimated for achievement of the stated standards by a candidate whose starting point is as described in the access statement. The notional design length for this unit is 40 hours. The use of notional design length for programme design and timetabling is advisory only. CONTENT/CONTEXT The candidate successfully completing this unit will require basic knowledge of machine woodworking processes. The unit deals with the use of sophisticated software to implement the pre-production planning essential to economic production by producing component lists, cuttings lists, cutting plans, costs and stock control information. APPROACHES TO GENERATING EVIDENCE It is important that a suitable software package is utilised in delivering this unit. Where possible, specialist staff who are conversant with the requirements of industry should be involved. The candidate should be provided with a brief, comprising of details/specifications for complete assemblies. Where possible, the brief should relate to the industrial background or particular interests of the candidate. Tutorials, instruction and information sheets together with guidance should be given at every stage, but the brief must be completed on the candidate's initiative in order to achieve an accurate assessment of competence. ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Since the unit comprises almost entirely of practical work, an assignment would be a suitable means of assessment. The assignment should include sufficient information for the assessment of all outcomes and performance criteria. Satisfactory achievement of the outcomes could be assessed against agreed exemplars to both pass and merit standards. PROGRESSION This unit forms part of the programme for the Advanced Certificate in Machine Woodworking. Candidates successfully completing the Advanced Certificate will be able to progress to the HNC in Construction Practice. 6

Each unit is a separate part of the framework of units for the award and units are not necessarily taken in a prescribed order, although there is a logical sequence to the acquisition of the skills and knowledge concerned. To gain the award the candidate must successfully complete all of the following mandatory units. Machine Woodworking: Shaping Machines Machine Woodworking: Sawing Machine Woodworking: Planing, Moulding and Sanding Machine Woodworking: Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) Machine Woodworking: Jointing Techniques plus two of the following optional units: Machine Woodworking: Profile Grinding Machine Woodworking: Setting Out Machine Woodworking: CNC Machining (Routing) Machine Woodworking: CNC Part Programming (Routing) REFERENCES 1.
