SDMX at the IMF OECD/UNECE Expert Group Meeting, Geneva March 8-9, 2010

Agenda SDMX in Production at the Fund SDMX in Development at the Fund Discussion Topics As an SDMX sponsor, the IMF is committed to implementing SDMX standards to facilitate the efficient flow of data and metadata among our partners. The IMF Statistics Department and the Technology and General Services Department are cooperating extensively to make this happen.

Bilateral data exchanges Member countries SDMX in Production BOP (SDMX-EDI): 7 EU countries, Euro Area, and Canada Reserves Template (SDMX-EDI): 4 EU countries, Euro Area, and Norway Integrated Correspondence System (SDMX-ML): ML): Download BOP DSD and upload data. Sample SDMX-ML ML data files by country are available on SDMX.IMF.ORG International/Regional organizations NEW NEW BIS (SDMX-EDI and SDMX-ML): ML): Intl. Banking Statistics looking to standardize using SDMX-ML ML for all exchanges EUROSTAT (SDMX-EDI): National Accounts data for 21 EU countries, Croatia and Turkey ECB (SDMX-EDI): Monetary Statistics for 16 euro area countries and 9 Pre-ins OECD and FAO (SDMX-ML): ML): Use IMF web service (IMF.Stat) to pull exchange rates JEDH (SDMX-ML): ML): IMF posts CPIS and reserves data files on sdmx.imf.org

NEW Data dissemination & visualization IMF Data Mapper use of SDMX web service to pull data Data Mapper is being redeveloped to harmonize with the open source FlexCB initiative of ECB et al 1/ Potential to exchange visualization components Public web service Provides OECD, FAO limited access to IMF.Stat data and metadata using SOAP and RESTful interfaces Not yet compliant with COG SDMX in Production 1/ The ECB, together with the NY Federal Reserve and others have developed an open source, Flex-based data visualization framework that utilizes SDMX web services.

NEW SDMX in Development Data dissemination Principal Global Indicators ** as flagship for SDMX standards Initially to showcase SDMX dissemination web services to the public Will develop cross-domain DSD in collaboration with IAG 1/ Working on compliance with COG and forthcoming SDMX 2.1 based on PGI- SDMX WG recommendations Expand over time to showcase data collection via registry ** The PGI website presents data for the Group of 20 (G-20) to facilitate the monitoring of economic and financial developments for these systemically important economies. Launched in response to the on-going financial and economic crisis, it is hosted by the IMF, and is a joint undertaking of the Inter-Agency Group on Economic and Financial Statistics (IAG) 1/ 1/ IAG members include BIS, ECB, Eurostat, IMF, OECD, UN and WB

NEW SDMX in Development Bilateral data exchanges Issue Government Finance DSD (Spring 2010) Two data flows (High frequency data and Yearbook data) Will consult with others on draft versions Convert SDMX-EDI data exchanges to SDMX-ML ML (2010) BIS, ECB Convert CSV data exchanges to SDMX-ML ML (2010) OECD Improve the timeliness of data exchanges through real-time pulling of data (dependant on other agencies implementation of SDMX web services)

NEW SDMX in Development Metadata exchange MSD for SDDS/GDDS/DQAF MSD developed with Metadata Technology (version ) To support future reporting of DSBB metadata in SDMX-ML ML format MSD for IMF.Stat metadata MSD developed with Metadata Technology and enhanced internally Compliant with OECD Metastore metadata categories MSD is generated by the web service Web service for PGI, other data sets fed by IMF.Stat (partially implemented)

Discussion topics 1. Is there interest in an SDMX lite lite? Dissemination usage, e.g., PGI (cross sector) API interfaces for accessing public data on the web, e.g., imf.org 2. Strategy for expanding data collection via SDMX? Member Countries is there a tipping point? Constraints? International Organizations Aim for timely/more frequent data exchanges (PGI) and expand to more sectors, e.g., Government Finance Statistics 3. Strategy for limiting the number of DSDs for each sector (esp for data collection) Map existing DSDs to SDMX Subject-Matter Domains list and assign Governance to existing working groups 4. Implementation of Content Oriented Guidelines Enabled by dimensional structure of IMF.Stat data warehouse Mapping strategy most likely approach. Are there other approaches that work well for organizations? 5. Strategy for registries (how many? does it matter?) Reuse an existing registry or build another for PGI?
