UltraNFC Label Overview Introduction PakSense UltraNFC Labels monitor time and temperature of perishable products during distribution and storage. Labels are flat and transfer time/temperature data via short-range near field communications (NFC) utilizing NFC-enabled Android phones and tablets. Label data is immediately available on the screen of the Android device. UltraNFC Labels give users the freedom to use Android devices to download data. UltraNFC Labels use an innovative temperature sensor that enables them to take a surface read of the object to which they are attached. This provides a closer approximation of actual product temperature versus the general ambient readings provided by bulkier recorders. Labels sample temperature every minute for highly accurate temperature reads and are encased in waterproof packaging. Further, each label is NIST traceable. Because of the unique physical characteristics of the sensor, labels do not require ongoing calibration to maintain accuracy. All labels are manufactured in ISO-9001 registered facilities. 4

Understanding the UltraNFC Label UltraNFC Labels 10. Temperature Alert Parameters 1. Serial Number & Barcode Representation 9. Part Number 2. QR Code 8. In Use Life 7. Data Download Points - Ultra Contact Reader 6. Plastic Pouch 5. LED Actively Recording Indicator 3. Start Button 4. LED Upper/Lower Alert Indicators 1. Label Serial Number and Barcode Representation each label has a unique serial number which differentiates it from other PakSense Labels. When information is downloaded from the label, it will be identified by this serial number. 2. QR Code links to PakSense Label Reader App via user s device QR code scanner. 3. Start Button push the button a minimum of 2 seconds to activate the label. Once label is started, LEDs will flash in a sequence to indicate successful activation. Labels should be activated when the product is ready for shipment. 4. LEDs Upper/Lower Alert Indicators gives a quick visual indication of whether a product remained within temperature parameters. 5. LED Actively Recording Indicator flashes green when the label in active to signal data is being recorded. 6. Plastic Pouch each label is encased in a water proof, plastic pouch. 7. Data Download Points alternative data download method for use with the Ultra Contact Reader. 8. In Use Life use life indicates how long the label will log time and temperature. 9. Product Part Number a unique number that customers use to reorder additional labels with the same specification profile. 10. Temperature Alert Parameters signifies the label s upper and lower temperature parameters. Alerts will flash if these ranges are exceeded according to the label s programming. Note Note that each label is sealed in a waterproof plastic pouch. DO NOT REMOVE LABEL FROM PLASTIC POUCH. 5

Supported Android Systems Supported Android systems for UltraNFC Labels Any Android 4.1 or newer with NFC reader. NOTE: Not all Android devices are NFC-enabled. Activating PakSense UltraNFC Labels How to Activate UltraNFC Labels To activate the label, press the power button located in the lower right hand corner of the label for a minimum of 2 seconds. The label s LEDs will flash to indicate successful activation in a rotating sequence towards the power button. The rotation sequence will occur 5 times. Using the glue dot on the back of the label, apply label to the provided Find It sign and attach. Alternatively, apply label directly to product packaging. LEDs will flash every four seconds to indicate active monitoring. LED Alert Indicators Interpreting LED Alert Indicators LEDs flash in four second sequences and give a quick visual indication of whether a product remained within temperature parameters. Flashing OK indicates product was always within acceptable temperature range; flashing amber Over/Under symbols indicate the product drifted outside of acceptable range and the data should be examined further via a data download. Upper and lower temperature parameters are preprogrammed by PakSense. By default, each label has a 30 minute delay once temperature is out of range before the visual indicator is triggered. There is also an initial 30 minute delay before an alert is triggered to allow temperature to settle immediately after product is loaded for shipping. 1 Cool down periods do not appear in the graph of the mobile app and are not considered in calculating trip temperature statistics. Note that these default parameters can be customized. Also note that PakSense data logger only models do not indicate alerts. 1 Both the cool down period and the delay before a first alert can be modified via custom orders. If you have a custom label and would like to learn more about how these elements are defined, contact PakSense for more information. 6

PakSense Label Viewer Mobile App How to Download the PakSense Label Viewer Mobile App Visit for App download and product information. Or, scan the QR Code printed on the UltraNFC Label. Download Label Data How to Download Label Data 1. Open the PakSense NFC Label Reader Mobile App. 2. Confirm your mobile phone s NFC capabilities are turned on. If NFC is turned OFF, the app will alert you and provide directions on how to change the setting. 3. Consider turning on Notifications on your phone. This will provide audible indications of data transfer activities. This is found via the Settings icon of your mobile phone, Sound and Notification. 4. Place your Android device within one inch (2 cm) of the UltraNFC Label. 5. Data from label will be downloaded and saved to Android device. 7

Understanding the Data Understanding the Label Data The app will bring up a display of the label information when first read. Serial number and part number are displayed at the top. Also at the top right is a menu that allowing you to share label data and change the app settings. Below the label serial number are several tabbed areas that include the following: 1. Summary Tab - displays general information for the label including: color coded status and temperature statistics. If configured with alerts, a summary of the alert condition is displayed. 2. Alerts Tab - if the label is configured with alerts, the Alerts tab will display detailed information about each alert that was triggered while the label was recording. 3. Graph Tab - displays the temperatures recorded by the label in graph format. If the label is configured with alerts, the alert limits are displayed on the graph. 4. Table Tab - displays the temperatures recorded by the label in a table format. If the label is configured with alerts, important temperatures are color coded to indicate excursions. Once read, label data is stored in your device s internal memory. Read History screen displays a list of labels read by your device. Selecting a label reading will display that readings detailed information. Pressing and holding on the reading will give you the option to delete that single reading. Going to the settings from any screen allows you to change the displayed temperature units and clear all label reads from the phone. Note Note that time will correspond to the time on your mobile device. Note Note that UltraNFC Labels are backwards compatible with the PakSense SE Software and UltraContact Reader. 8

Label Placement Scenarios Ways to Place PakSense Labels The form factor of the PakSense Label promotes its use in a variety of scenarios including at the pallet, carton and product level. Pallet Level - Many customers apply PakSense Labels to the side of a pallet. PakSense provides signage and clear plastic pouching to facilitate locating labels on pallets at the receiving end as depicted in the photo to the right. Many customers place several PakSense UltraNFC Labels on different pallets within a load to perform temperature mapping. This promotes broader sampling and provides more detailed information on the temperature fluctuations experienced within a container. Temperature Mapping Scenario Carton Level - Many customers with high-value product where temperature specifications are critical may choose to use PakSense UltraNFC Labels on each individual carton inside a master case. Product Level - Labels are sealed in a plastic pouch and take surface reads of the object to which they are attached. They can be placed in or laid directly on top of product for highly accurate temperature reads. In order to facilitate finding PakSense UltraNFC temperature monitoring labels, it is recommended that placement of labels be clearly flagged on the outside of packaging. PakSense provides customers with Find It signs upon request. Certain sign models can also be used as return mailers. Find It Sign 9
