2 1 Description and key features 1.1 Description PakFormance is an integration platform that enhances our total systems approach and uses information to provide value to our customers. The PakFormance offering is a unique combination of IS hardware, IS software, and equipment that delivers a network for data exchange. The offering has the ability to link Sealed Air s systems to each other and to third party equipment (scales, printers, labelers etc.). PakFormance is modular, flexible, scalable, configurable, supportable, and focused on packaging. Through this new solution, Sealed Air brings to market new functionalities that allow visualization of the packaging process, automatic in-line weighing, automatic in-line label printing, batch management, tracing through the packaging line, and permanent monitoring for process improvement, etc. Being a modular implementation, the level of features and functionalities will be driven by the line configuration and IS software implemented. Sealed Air s PakFormance delivers continuous visibility over packaging rooms, enables process flow automation, traceability, increases efficiency and significantly reduces operating costs. PakFormance provides the ability to measure, control, and improve both processes and costs. The Sealed Air PakFormance Automatic Product Labeling Module (APLM) is an unrivalled equipment in the market place allowing for the automatic printing and labeling of naked products, with high precision label placement, and product dependant dynamic label formatting. It is composed of a Markem-Imaje label printer equipped with a Sealed Air applicator enclosed in a stainless steel housing. The APLM can be positioned at any stage of the packaging process. The Markem- Imaje unit is PakFormance compliant and hence our preferred labeling solution. Other labeling solutions may be explored on specific customer request. For variable product sizes, it is imperative that the Sealed Air PakFormance APLM is used in conjunction with a Product Sizing Module (PSM), positioned upstream of the labeling unit. It is controlled by the packaging line supervisor and applies labels onto naked products (only naked products). The best location to apply the label on the product is determined from the product sizes and position information communicated by the PSM. The use of Queue Conveyor Modules (QCM) is highly recommended to enable tracking of the product from the PSM up to the label applicator, guaranteeing the correct corresponding label is applied to the product. The printer of the APLM can dynamically print any type of information, constant, variable, logo or bar code. The print layout can be fully customized per product type, as long as the products are traced. Construction is simple and robust. All critical parts are treated against the corrosive environment often found in food production and packaging rooms. Designed with ergonomics, safety and hygiene in mind it is easy to use and clean, simple to maintain and meets all relevant European legislation for safety and hygiene. 2

3 1.2 Key features Automatic label printing, dispensing and application No operator required Suitable for product flow from right to left and left to right Thermal transfer or direct thermal printing technology Standard Markem-Imaje label creation software Speed up to 18 ppm Dynamic printing, customized per product if products are traced Enclosed in a stainless housing Flexible label dispensing. The APLM is able to apply a label on the product wherever the product is located on the conveyor. Hygienic design makes cleaning easy and effective 3

12 L1 4.6 Label applicator tool process The Label application tool is of modular construction and comprises a snap-lock fastening system for changing the applicator tool by hand, a flexible mechanism to level the pad during the application process, and an applicator pad which is specifically designed to match the label size. Snap-lock fastener Flexible mechanism Vacuum pickup and sensor housing Pad (size is dependent on the label size) The APLM tool, used to apply the label to the product, must be ordered separately to suit the required label size. It is therefore important to communicate the correct label size where L1 is the length of the label (in the label forward direction) and B1 is the width of the label (square to the label forward direction). It is important to note that B1 can be greater than L1. Each APLM can only use one label size. Additional label sizes must be ordered as a customization request. Label Layout: Black printing only Label forward direction L1 Label layout in any direction B1 B1 Label printing surface 12

13 As well as the APLM (V1..V4) equipment order, a mail needs to be sent to CS&L with the following information: Customer; APLM Tool order; Label size = L1 x B1 Pay attention to the order of L1 and B1. Consider the minimum and maximum possible label size. To prevent direct contact (and therefore possible product contamination) of the pad with the product, the size of the pad is correct so that the label protrudes over all sides of the pad. 13
