3 LA SPEZIA GENERAL INFO History The area of what is the Port of today has been home to humans since pre-historic days. The uncovering of archaeological sites has proved the presence of settlements dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. Many remains of the Roman Empire can be found in the nearby towns of Luni, Bocca di Magra, and Ameglia, with the Arsenal of the Port itself actually lying atop the ruins of a Roman villa. In successive historical periods, the territory of fell under the hegemony of different domains including the Byzantine Empire, the Lombards in 64 AD with the conquering of the Liguria region, and in 77 AD the reign of Frankish king Charlemagne. Likewise many other coastal settlements, became a key post of the Republic of, and remained so until the latter s decline. Between the th and th century, the Port progressively developed into an important trade center, with the city establishing a certain degree of autonomy, and nurturing a fervid mercantile community. By the end of this period, the Port was fortified with the construction of the Saint George Castle, overlooking the whole bay. The Republic of, however, regained control of the area when it burned the castle. The fortress was restored in 4, the city walls were in turn reinforced, and five new towers were built to protect the community. During the 6th and 7th centuries, the urban area of Sarzana was the center of power for the region comprising the Gulf of. Urban development created a near-continuous city that remained relatively unchanged until the beginning of the industrial era. In 57, a Spanish fleet sailed into the Port of to confront the Republic of and the Duchy of Savoy. The Genoese Republic increased the fortifications at the Saint George Castle to buttress its power in the area. In the late 8th century, Napoleon s armies invaded northern Italy, bringing an end to the Republic of and making the Port of part of its Liguria Republic. was annexed into the French Empire in 85, and it was declared a military port in 88. By the time the Kingdom of Sardinia drove the French out of the area in 85, the Port of La Spezia had continued to be an important strategic military harbor, strengthening its position as a maritime commercial center, while at the same time attracting more tourists, also in light of the undertaking of new public works. In 849, the government decided to build the Arsenal in the Port of : construction continued from 86 to 869, bringing many new residents to the city and new military-industries, including the ship yard. By the time the unified Kingdom of Italy was established in 86, was home to about 5 thousand people. In 86, world-famous freedom fighter, Giuseppe Garibaldi, was assigned to the Port of, and his troops were headquartered in the city. Around 87, with the breakthrough of the Arsenal, the city had turned into a fervid urban center with tree-lined avenues, a new residential neighborhood for workers, and a growing population of military personnel. By 884, about 7 thousand people lived in. Civil works for the development of the mercantile port had also begun and continued unremittingly. The railway at the time connected to Parma, and new electric power was established in the city. During the 9th century, the Port gained in popularity as a tourist center. Social and economic change was dramatic and the city grew from a quaint village into a modern municipality. By 9, the population had grown to about 7 thousand individuals. New public buildings, including a new hospital, were constructed. The public library and a new Spezia football club began operating in 96. During the early th century, the Port became a more important cultural center as well. After World War I, a new urban plan was developed, bringing new public buildings and monuments. Due to its military importance, the Port of endured many Allied air raids during World War II. In 94, the Arsenal and many of the city s architectural and historical sites were damaged or destroyed by bomb explosions. Fighting continued in the Port of even after the armistice of 94, and the Resistance was active in the area for the remainder of war, resisting pockets of fascist hold-outs. Following the end of the conflict, the Port of La Spezia was recognized by the Allies for its military strategic importance. Post-war reconstruction saw the clearing of remains of many historic buildings that had been damaged. Three ships carrying Jewish survivors traveling to Israel sailed from the Port of La Spezia to Palestine in 946. Population declines in the late th century led to efforts to convert industrial facilities, to re-develop the city s ship-building industry, to build maritime commerce following the revolution of containerization, and to increase tourism. The Port of enjoys a deep natural harbor protected by a peninsula to the west and mountains to the east. The outer. kilometer (.4 mile) long dam at the mouth of the gulf provides tranquil waters and smooth approaches to anchorage points and the docks. Source: W e l c o m e
