2 About the NVF The Nordic Road Association (NVF) was established in Stockholm on 19 June The founding members were Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden; the Faroe Islands became a member in The NVF facilitates cooperation within the sector, with members from both the public and private sectors and a total of some 320 member organisations in the Nordic countries. Vision Expertise without frontiers Mission To promote advances within the road, road traffic and road transport sector through cooperation among professionals in Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and Sweden Role Exchange of information, knowledge and experience within and among the Nordic countries Organisation Work in the NVF is organised in 4-year periods which culminate in the congress Via Nordica. Chairmanship of the NVF rotates among the member countries. Each member country has a national association that is affiliated with the NVF. The NVF is governed by the NVF Board, which consists of the chair, vice chair and secretary of the national associations. The chair of the Communication Group has observer status on the Board. The chair, vice chair and secretary in the country that has the chairmanship assume the roles of Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary of the NVF Board during the four-year period. The secretaries of the national associations comprise a Secretary Group which, under the leadership of the NVF Secretary, is responsible for the on-going activities of the NVF. A Communication Group, which is responsible for information and communication, provides support to the Board and the committees. The work of the NVF takes place within the committees. Some committees have both a national and a Nordic level, while other committees exist only on the Nordic level. Each committee has a chair and a secretary. Chairmanship of the various committees is apportioned among the member countries.

3 Strategic themes The strategic themes govern activities within the NVF. They represent key issues for the sector as a whole, reflecting both trends and challenges in the Nordic countries. The strategic themes for the period from 2012 to 2016 are: 1. Safe and environmentally sound transport systems Transport systems must have the least possible negative impact on people and the environment. 2. Quality and resource optimisation in transport systems Infrastructure and transport options should meet the expectations of society and of transport users for quality and resource optimisation. A life-cycle perspective is to be implemented for the transport infrastructure, and transport systems must provide good accessibility, reliability and regularity for the transport of persons and goods. 3. Competent and efficient organisations The road and transport sector must have access to and maintain relevant competence. Organisational structures and patterns of cooperation must ensure efficient resource utilisation and high quality output and services. 4. Innovation and renewal Innovation and renewal are crucial for progress in the road and transport sector. This includes the development and implementation of new technologies and of new forms of organisation, cooperation, contracting, financing, etc.

4 Committees The NVF has 16 working committees, of which 14 function on both the national and the Nordic level, while 2 are purely Nordic committees. For those that function at both levels, the NVF committee is comprised of the national committees. An overview of the committees and strategic themes is shown below.
