Broadening our horizons November 2009

Reaching new heights of excellence On many levels, the past years have been of paramount importance for Malta Freeport which witnessed the realisation of various investments crucial for the Company s ability to attain a high rhythm of activity on all fronts of its operations. Following the extension of the concession agreement in February 2008 which the Government of Malta granted CMA CGM for Malta Freeport Terminals from 30 years to 65 years, Malta Freeport Terminals was obliged to undertake an extensive expansion programme of its facilities. Indeed, since being privatised in October 2004, Malta Freeport Terminals has invested million. This included the purchase of new equipment including additional super post-panamax Quayside Cranes, Yard Cranes, modernisation of existing equipment and infrastructural works including the development of the container yard and dredging works. Malta Freeport has recently boosted its operational capabilities with the delivery of four new ZPMC super post-panamax Quayside Cranes. These are now all operational on the North Quay of Terminal Two. This development was imperative for the Freeport considering that shipping lines are investing heavily in ever-larger container vessels. With the investment in these Quayside Cranes Malta Freeport Terminals can effectively handle containerships of over 13,500 TEUs. In all, the Container Terminals are now served by twenty-three Quayside Cranes, nine of which were purchased over the last three years. To complement the heavy investment made in quayside equipment, Malta Freeport also concentrated its efforts on yard equipment. To-date, since its privatisation the Company has purchased thirty Konecranes Rubber-Tyred Gantries with a capacity of 50 tonnes and capable of stacking containers one-over-five high. An additional twenty Rubber-Tyred Gantries with a capacity of 50 tonnes and capable of stacking containers one-over-six high are presently being manufactured. In line with this intensive development Malta Freeport has also radically boosted its ancillary yard equipment with the

purchase of various Reachstackers, Tractors, cornerless Trailers, Empty Handlers and Forklifts. Another valuable facet of the comprehensive investment of the Freeport is the development in four phases of an additional 100,000 square metres of land behind Terminal One. Works on three of these phases have been completed providing an additional 60,000 square metres on Terminal One. Additional reefer gantries have also been installed in order to be able to accommodate higher plug-in facilities. The ongoing investment in the latest technology plays a crucial role in the Freeport s operations and the Company is served by a specialised real-time container terminal computerisation system from Zebra Technologies Corporation. Indeed the Sparcs and Express systems are providing accurate information for planning, managing and tracking container movements throughout the Container Terminals. Effective EDI connections are also in place to facilitate the intermodal handling of containers by streamlining information exchanges. Malta Freeport Terminals has also recently invested in a REFCON System provided by YORK Marine APS of Denmark to remotely monitor all reefer containers equipped with an ISO reefer modem. This system is advantageous to the Freeport s clients and is providing the Terminal with the ideal solution for the complete monitoring of reefer containers on the Terminal. Undoubtedly the various initiatives being pursued are not an end in themselves and the undeniable objective is to be able to deliver services in tune with the clients needs whilst guaranteeing them an unfailing performance. The productivity levels being attained bear witness to the Freeport s forward looking strategy which is aiding the Company to maximise its benefits.

Dynamic Mediterranean Transhipment Hub Enjoying all the prerequisite criteria for success in the transhipment scenario, Malta Freeport is truly the clients strategic partner in business as it offers a myriad of benefits that are unparalleled by competing ports in the Mediterranean region. Benefits that set the Freeport apart from other Mediterranean container terminals include: Strategic location capable of serving the east and the west of the Mediterranean in a single call Minimal diversion distance of just six nautical miles between Gibraltar and the Suez Canal Easily accessible and safe port entrance Natural and sheltered deep water harbour Port configuration predisposed for least delays for vessels wanting to berth or sail The turning circle inside the harbour leads to manoeuvring areas for the two Terminals State-of-the-art transhipment facilities offering 2 kilometres of operational deep water quays. The water depth at the North Quay of Terminal Two is 17 metres and 15.5 metres at Terminal Two South Quay and Terminal One North Quay. The Container Terminals are served by twenty-three Quayside Cranes, nine of which were purchased over the last three years. Links by regular liner services with over 125 ports world-wide Proven track record Specialised Technology Highly skilled, professional and flexible personnel Fast turnaround times Cost-effective operations Harmonious relations with workers All-year favourable weather conditions Complete ancillary services

Key strategies to concretise future success To add greater value to its entire operations, Malta Freeport will be undertaking other auspicious development programmes at its facilities. These will offer it exciting growth prospects and will improve the commercial and operational efficiency of the Company, thus guaranteeing its long-term viability. Following the upgrading works of the North Quay of Terminal Two last year which was dredged to -17 metres LAT enabling the Freeport to berth vessels with a 15.5 metres draught, the Freeport is presently upgrading the Marsaxlokk Port navigation access to allow ships over 13,000 TEUs to enter the Port. In this respect Malta Freeport Terminals is deepening to -17 metres LAT the area between the Marsaxlokk port fairway and Malta Freeport Terminals. Works include the upgrading of the ship manoeuvring area, the navigation channels, quay approaches and mainline berths to -17 metres LAT. The Company will also be dredging alongside the South Quay of Terminal Two and the North Quay of Terminal One to -17 metres LAT thus enabling vessels to berth with a 15.5 metres draught. Malta Freeport also intends to expand Terminal One West Quay to 300 metres with an upgraded draught of -13 metres LAT enabling a berthing draught of 12.5 metres MSL. This investment will enable the Freeport to handle container vessels with a capacity of 6,500 TEUs at this berth. Another important development includes the squaring-off of the existing Ro-Ro berth of Terminal Two so as to increase the North Quay of this Terminal to 688 metres and the West Quay to 312 metres. When all the planned works will be completed, Malta Freeport Terminals will be increasing its operational quay length on both Terminals to over 3 kilometres. The initiatives being pursued stand as a symbol of Malta Freeport s tryst with progress. Traffic volumes handled have increased remarkably by 60% since being privatised to reach 2.33 million TEUs last year, reflecting that the Freeport is responding favourably to the increasing demands of the transhipment business. Such positive results have put the Freeport back on the world map in maritime terms. Indeed the future holds many exciting challenges for Malta Freeport Terminals.
