9 FOREIGN TRADE ZONE #220 Created in 1934, US Foreign Trade Zones ( FTZ ) are geographical areas in or adjacent to US Ports of Entry. Commercial merchandise within these FTZ's both domestic and foreign receives the same US Customs treatment as if it was outside the domestic commerce of the US. This merchandise is not subject to US Customs duties and other ad valorem taxes. FTZ's tariff and tax relief lowers the costs of US based business operations and take part in international trade thus retaining and creating further employment and improving capital investment opportunities. CONTAINER FREIGHT STATIONS Container Freight Stations ( CFS ) are privately owned US Customs and Border Protection bonded facilities at which imported merchandise is made available to Customs Officers for physical examination. A CFS may be established in any port or any portion of a port or any other area under the jurisdiction of a district director.
