2 The Project INTEGRITY INTEGRITY Intermodal Global Door-to-door Container Supply Chain Visibility The INTEGRITY-project is funded by the 7 th Framework Programme for Research & Development and liaises with several EU Directorates. INTEGRITY aims at significant improvements of the reliability and predictability of global door-to-door container transports by optimizing the cooperation between transport industry and Customs Authorities in the China-EU trade corridor. The consolidation of data will significantly improve the transparency of the transport chain. At the same time the container security will be significantly improved. In September 2009 INTEGRITY implemented its IT platform SICIS - the Shared Intermodal Container Information System. SICIS tracks containers along the entire logistics chain and registers all data and related events which are generated during the transport. SICIS monitors the INTEGRITY consortium members containers regularly on their trip from China to Europe. By the end of the project the aim is to monitor several thousand containers using this platform. News INTEGRITY integrates vessel tracking and Container Security Devices Container monitoring and AIS - vessel tracking are combined with the latest key component - Container Security Devices Visualization of vessel events using standardised tools Since the beginning of this year SICIS provides a new unique function, which links container monitoring data with vessel tracking information provided by satellites using the vessels AIS signals (Automatic Identification System). The vessels positions combined with related events like course divergences are visualized on a Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics 2

3 world map. Buyers, sellers and logistics providers in the supply chains are able to track vessels and corresponding containers to get information about their position and their status at all times. Furthermore, INTEGRITY has achieved one of its major milestones in March, By using data from Container Security Devices (CSDs) SICIS is now able to monitor container movements by merging these data from CSDs and terminal messages. The first CSD equipped container started its trip on the MOL Prosperity from the DHL Consolidation Centre in Hong Kong on March 29 th. After following the major INTEGRITY tradelane from China to Europe the container was discharged at the Delta DDE Terminal of project partner ECT in Rotterdam on April 27 th and was unloaded at the DHL Global Forwarding Ocean Freight warehouse in Rotterdam. The starting event in SICIS was still a manual process performed by the factory where the container was stuffed. With the use of CSDs this process is also automated. By closing the container, the CSD will be activated. Immediately a GPS position will be acquired and all details will transferred to the SICIS server. The GPS module and the GSM communication allow the reporting of waypoint events by using geo-fencing functionality and also any tampering of the container. Possible gaps during the sea leg of the voyage will be closed by integrating AIS signals of the vessel obtained via satellites. The first CSD equipped container in preparation for its trip to Europe At the moment, the only movements we can guarantee accuracy on are those in SICIS. For us SICIS is proving to be a lifeline. Robin Smith, Senior Manager Research, BAP Group Ltd It should be noted that, although the data quality provided by CSDs cannot be achieved by other means, the INTEGRITY approach is in no way dependent on their use. Because it is considered unlikely to equip each and every container with a CSD in the near future, a manual start process and a tracking based on terminal data are still an option. 4 Johan van Wensveen, Manager Logistic Competence Center, DHL Global Forwarding, and Dr. Albert Veenstra, Erasmus University Rotterdam, proudly present the first Container Security Device which monitored a SICIS container shipment We want to become the First Choice for our customers, employees and investors and are therefore always searching for good innovations and means to improve the service to our customers and make our processes simpler and more transparent. SICIS would enable real-time information sharing of various parties along the supply chain resulting in better visibility, i.e. including the container terminal at origin, container terminal at destination and Customs. We are using DHL controlled containers for this trial with CSDs and it allows us to perform pro-active monitoring of the supply chain. Equipping these containers with GPS devices enables us to view the container s current location and to see the security status of the container, i.e. if the doors have been opened. These enhancements will lead to reliability of the overall supply chain, enhanced security and a potential Green Lane by Customs in future. 5 China Customs met INTEGRITY in Beijing On March 3 rd, 2010 a delegation of INTE- GRITY representatives was invited for a meeting at the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) in Beijing. The high-level delegation of Chinese Customs was led by Director Hao Chongfu. During the meeting representatives of the INTEGRITY project illustrated the project approach and its current status. After the project presentations and exchanging information, inspiring and lively discussions followed. It was pointed out that GACC could be granted access to the neutral information system SICIS aiming at enhanced supply chain visibility and improved Customs clearance processes in the same way as the participating European Customs. In summary, the INTEGRITY project was considered very interesting and its approach promising. INTEGRITY and SmartCM 2 nd meeting of the Joint Advisory Board (JAB) in London On April 14 th the second meeting of the Joint Advisory Board (JAB) took place in London. The objective of the JAB committee - launched together from INTE- GRITY and the partner project SmartCM - is to discuss the structures and developments of both projects in order to put them on a profound basis. About 50 participants with different backgrounds like Customs, associations, port operators, insurers, CSD manufacturers, 3PLs as well as IT experts attended. A high-level delegation of Chinese Customs attended the JAB Furthermore, a high-level delegation from China Customs participated in this event on invitation by the INTEGRITY consortium. Central points were discussed intensely; for example trends in business models, which could facilitate projects solutions acceptance and implementation. 6 The attendees appreciated the developments of the projects and also the agreement between INTEGRITY and SmartCM concerning a cooperation of both projects. Additionally it was emphasized that the acceptance of CSDs by Customs is near a solution. INTEGRITY delegation visited Chinese tradelane partners Shenzhen, China, and Hong Kong were the destinations for the trip of a European IN- TEGRITY delegation to Asia from March 3 rd to 5 th. Visits to INTEGRITY partner companies which are based in Asia were scheduled among other issues. During the trip the INTEGRITY delegation visited the manufactures Harbour Industries, PaTech Industries for Seacon logistics customer JUMBO and Mattel Factory as well as the consolidation centres Cargo Services Far East, AS Watson International Buying Office Fotan and DHL Global Forwarding HK ltd. Purpose of the visits was the examination of the logistics processes in the factories and consolidation centres in order to facilitate the integration of consignment data in the neutral IT platform SICIS, which aims at an enhanced visibility of container transports and improved Customs clearance procedures. The personal contacts between system developers and users achieved during the visits will clearly suport the successful development of SICIS. INTEGRITY negotiates with Chinese CSD providers During the ongoing INTEGRITY demonstration phase, the SICIS system is continuously monitoring containers on their way from Yantian, China to Felixstowe and Rotterdam. The INTEGRITY project partners will now start to integrate additional technical equipment to accomplish extended test runs with SICIS monitored containers based on container security devices. Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics 6

7 CSDs will be responsible for initiating the container monitoring by sending a start journey event, for sending security events such as door opened to SICIS and they will act as data provider to update the container location. The INTEGRITY consortium established contacts to several CSD providers in order to achieve a possible cooperation. Recently, two Chinese CSD providers, CIMC and Long Sun, were invited for talks in Hong Kong to present their products to a delegation of INTEGRITY partners. During the discussions, it was concluded that the application of CSDs from both providers is feasible. The parties agreed on further information exchange in order to define details of a possible cooperation. Project management meeting in Den Haag In February Den Haag was the venue of the 4 th INTEGRITY Project management meeting. Representatives of all project partners met to discuss the current project status and the following steps in the project. A main topic of the meeting was the current status of the SICIS system. The present SICIS version links vessel data to already available container data and connects them with external vessel tracking systems. The Meeting of the INTEGRITY project partners next important improvement will be the option to link existing data from container monitoring with consignment information relevant for Customs. 8 At present SICIS is continuously monitoring containers on their way from Yantian, China to Felixstowe and Rotterdam. The INTEGRITY project partners will now start to negotiate with additional ports and terminals, e.g. Hong Kong, to accomplish further test runs with SICIS monitored/csd equipped containers. 3rd European Conference on ICT for Transport Logistics (ECITL) We are pleased to announce the 3rd European Conference on ICT for Transport Logistics (ECITL 10). The 2nd ECITL was successfully held on the 29 th and 30 th of October in Venice. The encouragement of the participants led to the common decision to organize the 3rd European Conference on ICT for Transport Logistics on the 4 th and 5 th of November 2010 in Bremen. This year s conference will focus on Intelligent ICT systems and their contributions for the implementation of Green Logistics Strategies. The event is mainly organized by the University of Applied Sciences Vorarlberg GmbH (FHV) and is supported by several independent EU funded projects (Logistics for LIFE, e-freight, EURIDICE, INTEGRITY, SMART-CM and SMARTFREIGHT) dealing with different issues in transport logistics. Together they try to establish a common exchange and cooperation platform for stakeholders and researchers in the logistics sector. The target audience includes everyone who is involved in logistics operations, e.g. logistics operators, industry, infrastructure providers and authorities. In continuation of the attractive locations of the 1st and 2nd conferences in Lucerne and Venice the ECITL 10 will take place in Bremen - a business centre with high logistics competence and extensive commercial relations to the whole world. Three unique historical buildings placed around the market place will host the participants of the ECITL 10. The local host for this conference will be the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) co-located in Bremen and Bremerhaven. The event is also supported by Ministry for Economic Affairs and Ports of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and its Minister, underlined by a personal welcome.
