3 What is Midway Alignment? Midway Alignment of the Bothnian Corridor is an TEN-T-financed project that aims at: Expanding/strengthening the connections between strong, fast growing, internationally important regions. Connecting periferal regions to the European transport network. Enabling economic development, bringing the regions closer to each other and to other regions within the EU. Improving the transport routes in the Bothnian Corridor and supporting the existing multimodal TEN-T network, making use of multiple modes of transport (sea, road, railroad) Alatunniste 3

4 Some steps taken to increase Crossborder Cooperation Nordic Logistic Corridor (INTERREG) a functioning transport route in eastwest direction connecting Northern part of Europe with Russia and Asia. Joint ferry company founded in 2012 between the cities of Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden A joint port company established between Vaasa and Umeå. Up and running All of these a part of Nordic Logistic Corridor and Midway Alignment of The Bothnian Corridor Cooperation between Universities, hospitals, municipalities in Umeå and Vaasa Alatunniste 4

5 Project objectives Upgrade the transport link between Finland and Sweden Support the EU transport goals Connect Nordic countries, with the EU network Create and facilitate regional development Increase social and cultural cooperation Increase industrial development and increase trade To create a logistic transport system from Norway through Sweden and on to Finland, and further, by investments in infrastructure, logistics and maritime transport. To build a complete transport chain for goods and passengers

6 Activities Phase 1, Studies ( ): Initial activities: infrastructure investments, temporary ferry Preparatory studies: Transport development, Environmental analysis, Rail development analysis, Port development analysis, Market analysis, Financial Engineering, Traffic management analysis Development of concept: transport concept and ferry concept, and land infrastructure concept/plan Design of ferry Design and planning of land based infrastructure Budget: 20,7 MERU Phase 2, Works ( ): Construction of ferry Construction of land infrastructure and port development Implementation and improvement of traffic management

7 Phase 2 o Supporting and connecting to the transport network corridors and connected transport hubs, with core status. Thus creating possibilities for peripheral regions to receive CEF financing.

8 Infrastructure and logistics o Improvements in the port facilities o Improvements in rail and road transport system connecting to the port and the TEN-T network o Multimodal logistic systems in the ports o Investments in a transport management system in order to create a multimodal transport chain Alatunniste 8

9 Public-Private Partnership o o The Midway Alignment Project is a Public-Private Partnership with a large number of organizations cooperating in the activities and supporting the project.
