4 1.0 General 1.1 Scope This document is to establish a uniform means of tagging street light poles installed inside the City of Ottawa service territory. The following items lie within the scope of this document and will be outlined in subsequent sections. 1. Materials required for tagging 2. Arrangement and placement of tagging materials 3. Process and accountabilities for ensuring proper tagging is completed Poles owned by the Electrical Supply Authority shall have the Electrical Supply Authority s pole tagging system (if available) and no street light pole tags shall be installed on these poles. This specification section shall be read in conjunction with engineering specification LGC Introduction This document was developed to standardize the fabrication and installation of nomenclature tags for street light poles. Ensuring poles are tagged properly will speed the location of devices in the field and minimize the risk of errors during equipment operation and maintenance. All new distribution equipment shall be tagged with the appropriate equipment identification nomenclature in a manner consistent with this document. Existing equipment may be retrofitted with a new equipment identification tag under the following conditions: a) Conflict, confusion and/or duplication of existing equipment identification numbers b) Equipment is scheduled for major work. Major work is defined as capital projects that have a formal engineering drawing issued for fieldwork. c) Specific inspection/maintenance programs. 2.0 Reference Standards EUSA Electrical Utility Safety Rules August 2004 Hydro Ottawa Limited NPS0001-Identification of Electrical Distribution Equipment and Street-lighting 3.0 Definitions Controlled Equipment Number: Controlled equipment numbers are assigned by the Records Group during the planning and/or design phase of a project. Equipment Tag: A marker with equipment nomenclature. An equipment tag is different from a pole tag. Nomenclature standard: A standard that describes the equipment uniquely for a system by a set of names, or designators, or symbols. Pole Tag: A marker with pole nomenclature. A pole tag is different from an equipment tag. A pole tag will only be mounted on the pole whose nomenclature it bears. For City of Ottawa Use Only LPS0003 Rev.3 Page 4 of 6

5 Pole tag nomenclature has a prefix of X followed by a unique number. City of Ottawa uses the numbering range of 100,000 to 200,000 for its street light poles. 4.0 Materials 4.1 Pole Tags All pole tags are to be mm in length and 38 mm in width. Tags are Almatek, JUT-6037 or equivalent. Tags will be made of white plastic of 3.18 mm thickness, mounted on black plastic on 1.59 mm thickness such that when the pole number is etched into the plastic it will appear as black lettering on a white background. Each pole tag will have two 3.18 mm holes drilled so #8 38 mm screw can be used to mount them on street lighting wood poles. Pole tags will also contain four (4) mm long, 6.35 mm wide holes for strap mounting. Pole tags will be installed on concrete and aluminum poles with GE Silicon Type II clear caulking at the required location on the pole. 5.0 Installation Specifications New Construction 5.1 General Pole tags will be installed on the pole 2500 mm above final grade. The tag will be installed vertically, perpendicular to the traveled path and mounted such that it reads top to bottom. Where it is not possible to mount a tag at the common mounting height due to an obstruction or pole mounted equipment, the tag shall be placed as close as possible to the standard position. 6.0 Installation Specifications Existing Equipment 6.1 General In the event of a pole change, an old pole tag must be removed and exchanged for a new tag. This is to ensure that there is a consistent, standard process in dealing with new poles. By re-tagging any changed pole there will be no confusion about whether or not a pole is to be tagged. 6.2 Equipment Tags (Pole or Line Mounted) Equipment tags will be changed under the following circumstances: a) Conflict, confusion and/or duplication of existing equipment identification numbers b) Broken tags or tags missing numbers or letters c) Equipment is scheduled for major work. Major work is defined as capital projects that have a formal engineering drawing issued for fieldwork. d) Specific inspection/maintenance programs. Obsolete tags do not have to be changed during regular operating and maintenance procedures. Note that the streetlight records must be updated with pole nomenclature changes. 6 7.0 Process and Accountabilities 7.1 Designer/Project Manager The designer project manager will be responsible for the following as part of any pre-engineered job: a) Obtaining from the records department nomenclature for the poles b) Indicated device nomenclature on engineering drawings c) If device nomenclature is to be changed, both the old and the new nomenclature must be shown on the engineering drawing d) Ensuring all poles receive pole tags and that all tags are provided for installation 7.2 Records Administrator The Records Administrator will be responsible for: a) Update and maintain nomenclature database b) Update and maintain record maps c) Provide designers/project managers with any required nomenclature d) Provide designers/project managers with pole tags as requested Records Group has ownership of the old and new equipment identification records and systems. 8.0 Drawing Refer to the Electrical Standard Drawing Details.
