2 Fiducial Reference Measurements for Ground-based DOAS Air-Quality Observations 2-year project funded by ESA as part of the FRM programme (see Project KO Meeting: July partners: BIRA-IASB (Lead), IUP-Bremen, IUP-Heidelberg, MPIC, KNMI, and BKScientific GmbH + External collaboration with the Pandora Community (LuftBlick/NASA) Main objectives: Developement and demonstration of a centralised MAXDOAS processing system in support to the ESA S5P validation (WP 1000) Preparation of the CINDI-2 MAXDOAS intercalibration campaign (WP 2000) 2

3 CINDI-2 campaign (25/08-07/10/2016) CINDI-2: 2 nd Cabauw Intercomparison Campaign of Nitrogen Dioxide measuring Instruments Main goals: To assess the consistency of slant column measurements of several key target species (NO 2, O 3, O 4 and HCHO) of relevance for the validation of S5P and the future ESA atmospheric Sentinels, through coordinated operation of a large number of DOAS and MAXDOAS instruments from all over the world. To study the relationship between remote-sensing column and profile measurements of NO 2, HCHO and O 3 and reference in-situ concentration measurements of the same species. To investigate the horizontal representativeness of MAXDOAS measuring systems in view of their use for the validation of satellite tropospheric measurements featuring ground pixel sizes in the range of km 2. 3

4 CINDI-2 campaign participants 26 participating research institutes from 17 countries (8 EU countries + USA, Canada, Russia, Belarus, India, Pakistan, China, Japan, New Zealand) 34 MAXDOAS instruments + 2 zenith DOAS instruments + 1 long-path DOAS + 1 cavity-enhanced DOAS + 1 imaging- DOAS + 3 mobile-doas >20 ancillary instruments (NO 2 CAPS, NO 2 analysers, NO 2 and aerosol LIDARs, sondes, sun photometer, ceilometer, etc) Modelling support (AQ and meteorological forecasts) Local organisation and logistics: Arnoud Apituley/KNMI MAXDOAS 4

6 FRM 4 DOAS contribution to CINDI-2 Preparation of important documents for the campaign: Campaign scientific and technical requirements documents Campaign general planning document (description of the site and of the participating instruments, etc) Semi-blind intercomparison measurement acquisition protocol (e.g. procedure for spatial and temporal synchronisation between the different MAXDOAS spectrometers, DOAS settings and file format definition, etc) Data exchange protocols See CINDI-2 FRM 4 DOAS: Use of CINDI-2 data and results in the development of the FRM 4 DOAS centralised processing system 6

7 Preliminary results (I) Evolution of agreement of NO 2 slant columns during the semi-blind phase (comparison done by an independent referee and no institute names assignment to the different MAXDOAS instruments) 12-28/09/2016 Relative differences against median values 7

9 WP1000: centralised processing system From calibrated radiance spectra to vertical profiles and columns with a latency of 6-24h Partners stations (12) and CINDI-2 campaign measurements involved in the demonstration phase; design will allow an extension to more stations in the future 9

10 WP1000: current status Review and definition phase under progress: MAXDOAS network review Preparation of a Technology Readiness Level questionnaire to be sent to the MAXDOAS Community Definition of MAXDOAS best practices (instrument calibration and operation, DOAS analysis, etc) Definition of the spectra data and metadata files format Start of the MAXDOAS profiling algorithms Round-Robin exercise based on the profile retrieval intercomparison tests performed during CINDI-2 Definition of the processing system architecture including the design of traceability chains for each processing step Definition and set-up of the FRM 4 DOAS databases for level 1 (radiance spectra) and 2 (columns and profiles) data 10
