1 I DOMINION BUREAU OF STATISTICS OTTAWA CANADA Iutli'i:cJ b' 1 u!h't!y of Ike Hon Gordon Church,!?, Afs,,,Ie, of I rode and Commerce Vol 2, No 8 Price SHIPPING STATISTICS M em o r a n d urn $3,00 per year THE The volume of freight handled at Canadian ports during August led 15,864,320 tons, 169 per cent below the 19,082,990 tons reported for August last year Cargoes loaded in foreign trade declined by 261 per cent to 4,477,548 tons from 6,062,494 while unloadings fell 10 per cent, dropping to 4,481,478 tons from 4,984,558 In coastal trade, loadings declined to 3,220,124 tons from 3,609,380 and unloadings to 3,685,170 tons from 4,426,558 For the period JanuaryAugust, cargoes handled at Canadian ports were 135 per cent below last year, dropping to 86,995,626 tons from 100,609,525 Cargoes handled in foreign trade decreased to 43,199,058 tons from 56,739,355 and in coastal trade to 43,796,568 tons from 43,870,170 Vessel arrivals and departures in both services decreased to 28,998 from 30,671 in August, 1957, while registered net tonnage dropped to 30,145,215 tons from 32,065,033 For the period JanuaryAugust the number of arrivals and departures decreased by 14,043 Commodities loaded in greatest volume in foreign trade were wheat, iron ore, gypsum and newsprint As compared with August 1957, loadings of wheat were up by 103,021 tons, sand, gravel and crushed stone by 75,208 tons and woodpulp by 32,378 tons These increases, however, were more than offset by a decrease in iron ore of 1,354,023 tons Other decreases were recorded in shipments of gypsum, oats and general cargo resulting in a net decline of 1,584,946 tons Cargoes unloaded from foreign ports were down by 503,080 tons The largest decreases were in bituminous coal which dropped to 1,764,913 tons from 2,101,548 and in iron ore down to 696,860 tons from 837,033 In coastal trade, the greatest volume of shipping was recorded in wheat, bituminous coal, pulpwood and petroleum products Although unloadings of barley, pulpwood and general cargo were higher than in the previous August sizeable decreases in iron ore, sand, gravel and crushed stone, and wheat resulted in an overall decline this August of 741,388 tons Loadings were down 267 per cent to 4,480,622 tons in the Atlantic and lower St Lawrence River region, 85 per cent to 2,012,417 tons in the Great Lakes area and 115 per cent to 1, on the Pacific Coast Unloadings were also down in all three areas In the Atlantic and lower St Lawrence region cargoes unloaded dropped 87 per cent to 3,542,022 tons, in the Great Lakes area 173 per cent to 3,894,801 tons and on the Pacific coast 113 per cent to 729,825 tons Canadian ports registering the greatest volume of shipping during August were: Montreal, 2,160,820 tons (2,132,593 tons in August 1957); Seven Islands, 1,489,549 (2,676,144); Hamilton, 1,026,280 (1,110,223); and Vancouver, 959,952 (1,036,868) LLj Ln the Transportation and Public Utilities Section, Public Finance and Transportation Division EDMOND CL0UTLER, CMG, OA, DSP, Queen's Printer and Controller of Stationery Ottawa, 1958
