5 Introducing RFID-enabled intelligent technology The i-safe system is enabled by RFID (radio frequency identification), a wireless data collection technology. RFID technology has the ability to identify, track and assign information to unique items without direct contact or line-of-sight scanning. It is creating new and more efficient operational models in diverse industries and is revolutionizing the way business is done. An information highway for your safety program i-safe consists of passive RFID tags (transponders), scanned by PDA readers (receivers) that synchronize data with a web-enabled information portal. i-safe RFID Tags i-safe tags are now standard equipment on DBI-SALA products. Each tag is programmed with a unique ID that registers its model type and history. PDA Readers Tags are read by an on-site PDA that scans the piece of equipment and accounts for it by a unique number. One click entry logs inspections, equipment assignments by worker or location, and more. Web Portal Data is then linked from the PDA or laptop to your customized web portal. Your safety program website also provides instant access to related safety and equipment information, training records, product advisories, and useful links.

Are RFID tags like barcodes? The tags differ from barcodes in three significant ways. First, they are much more durable, and are not susceptible to dirt, grease and grime. Second, they do not require a direct line of sight. They can be read from the back, front or side of the product. Third, i-safe tags can be read from greater distances than are normally required with barcodes. Can the RFID tags cause sparks or interference with equipment? No. The RFID transponder tags do not operate at high enough energy levels to cause a sparking hazard. The tag is read when reached by the electromagnetic waves of the reader. How will my workers perceive i-safe? i-safe will give your workers confidence that their equipment is inspected and safe. Workers now know that they will have the right equipment at the right time, and that they will have access to instructions and information when and where they need it.

11 Section 1. Operation of your i-safe Intelligent Safety System 1.1 i-safe RFID tags Your fall protection equipment is now i-safe enabled with a small radio frequency ID (RFID) tag. The tags are read by portable electronic readers that scan the tag. Tags come from the factory pre-programmed with unique IDs that register model type and purchase history. The tags have no power source. They are activated by the electromagnetic waves from the reader. 1.2 i-safe PDA RFID readers Tags are easily read and assigned with an on-site PDA with RFID reader. PDAs with RFID readers included are available through DBI-SALA. Standard PDAs with a flash card slot may be adapted through purchase of a matchbook-sized RFID reader. Each PDA is linked by default to the registered owner in order to assign accountability for actions taken. This registration may be changed on the website. Equipment assignments may be made in multiple levels. For example, a piece of equipment may be assigned to a certain job site, then once on that job may be assigned to a particular worker. At headquarters Person in charge of equipment distribution scans to check inspection status. A special prompt notifies of any equipment that is past due inspection. If the equipment inspection is up-to-date, a simple click will record the assignment of that equipment to the specific job. On the job Supervisors can scan to assign to individual workers, check inspection status, or record inspections or re-assignment.

12 1.3 Equipment assignments and inspections An i-safe connection (conduit) on the PDA reader allows easy recording of equipment assignments and inspections. One click allows you to confirm that the piece of equipment has been inspected and logs the inspection with a time and date stamp and the inspector s name. A drop-down menu allows you to select the type of inspection being performed daily, yearly or some other interval determined by your company policy. 1.4 Laptop or PC upload to the i-safe web portal Data is then synchronized from the PDA to a laptop or PC through wireless or direct connection and instantly recorded on your secure i-safe web portal. PDAs equipped with a wireless Internet connection may synchronize directly to the web portal without the use of a computer and may access the site through the i-safe conduit. However an on-site laptop is convenient for viewing and easy use of all website features. 1.5 Retrofitting your other fall protection equipment Easy do-it-yourself retrofitting kits are available for all types of harnesses and lanyards, allowing you to extend the benefits of your i-safe system to your entire inventory regardless of brand. Information on model number, make, date of manufacture will need to be entered for each retrofit i-safe tag.
