2 Ohio s transportation system is anchored by 264,756 lane miles, 43,412 bridges, 4,526 miles of Class I railroad tracks, 716 miles of navigable waterways, and 163 public use airports provides the economic backbone to support the 7 th largest economy of any U.S. state and the 29 th largest economy in the World. In 2007, Ohio exported via Ohio s transportation system, $24.4 Billion worth of goods an increase of 11% from

4 It is the best of times and the worst of times The transportation industry is facing unprecedented construction inflation thus eroding purchasing power. Companies are facing rising energy costs. Transportation based industries are experiencing declining margins. 4

5 Rising Fuel Costs Regular gasoline has risen from $2.82 one year ago to $3.94 per gallon or 39.7% (September 15, 2008) Diesel fuel has risen from $3.02 one year ago to $4.17 per gallon or 38.1% (September 15, 2008) 5

6 Impacts on Travel There have been 1.5 million fewer airline passengers in the first six months of 2008 when compared to the same time frame in The vehicle miles travelled (VMT) have decreased approximately 2% when compared to January to June 2008 and the same time in People are driving less. 6

7 Impacts on Freight Movement Carries such as FedEx and UPS are applying increasing fuel surcharges to shipments. Nationally, an estimated 45,000 big rigs have been driven out of business by the cost of doing business and trucking companies are capping speeds at 60 mph to save fuel. Congestion on US freight rail system is a growing concern as shippers place more goods on the train. Cost of shipment of a container from China to L.A. has risen 50% in the last five years source CEO AMB Properties. 7

8 Impacts on Cost of Basic Needs The cost of importing and manufacturing clothing is increasing to due rising fuel costs. According to TIME, families are experiencing 60% rises in grocery bills. An increasing demand for biofuels are driving up commodity prices for corn and soybeans resulting in increasing food costs. 8

9 Impacts on Manufacturing in the U.S. Car manufacturers are looking to produce more cars locally due to shipping costs and decline in value of U.S. dollar. Companies such as Artco-Bell Corp. that manufacturers school furniture and Firestone Home Products are outsourcing less manufacturing. 9

10 It is the best of times and the worst of times Never before have the American people been so aware of the consequences of transportation. Ohio has many opportunities to capitalize on. 10
