1 The Bus Stop January 2010 Newsletter Western Piedmont Regional Transit Authority dba Hickory Transfer Center A new Transit Transfer Center will replace Union Square as the primary transfer point for all Fixed Route Bus Service. The transfer center will be located near 3rd St. S.W. between 1st Avenue S.W. and 2nd Avenue S.W. The construction is underway and scheduled to be completed in March 2010 or later. The addition of the transfer center will produce minor changes to the bus routes and scheduled times. The facility will offer parking, driver break area, ticket sales office and public restrooms. The architectural design below is the front, side view, and floor plan of the new Transfer Center.

2 In Progress Community Transportation Service Plan The North Carolina Department of Transportation requires that every five years a county develop a Community Transportation Improvement Plan (CTIP) or a Community Transportation Services Plan (CTSP) as a prerequisite for receiving Federal and State funding for capital, administrative and operating assistance. The CTSP identifies the transportation needs of the areas, available resources and describes the service design that will meet the needs of the areas transportation disadvantaged. The purpose of the plan is to evaluate the system s current approach in all facets of management and operations, evaluate the results of the system s current direction, identify organization strengths and target opportunities for improvement and assist in allocating available resources to facilitate each system s continuous improvement process. This study is being conducted by KFH Group Inc. working with Greenway, the Department of Transportation s Public transportation Division and the Western Piedmont Council of Governments. The study is underway and is scheduled to be completed by the fall of Bus Stop Improvement Program Greenway is in the process of planning a number of bus stop improvements throughout the service area. This includes new bus stop signs, additional passenger shelters, and bus and route information at each stop location, and bus stop lighting at key locations. This project is dependent on the agency receiving state and Federal economic stimulus funds. This project will begin in the Spring of Facility Feasibility Study This study was conducted by URS Corporation, a Consulting Company in order to develop a plan for a new maintenance and operations facility, or facilities that will serve the existing and future needs of WPRTA. The study identifies site requirements, recommends sites, provide an environmental scan and preliminary cost estimates. Currently two sites one Hickory and one in Conover, are under final consideration. Biodiesel Test Project One Fixed Route Bus has successfully been converted to Biodiesel. The four remaining buses will be converted one at a time. The completion date of the transition from diesel to biodiesel will be completed in the fall of The conversion will reduce the carbon emissions thus reduce the carbon footprint. AARA Funds The ARRA Funds or Stimulus funds will be utilized to fund several projects. The Federal and State funds have been released. A funding update and a list of projects will be in the next issue of the newsletter.
