3 Basic instructions 3.1 Proper use The balance you purchased is intended to determine the weighing value of material to be weighed. It is intended to be used as a non-automatic balcance, i.e. the material to be weighed is manually and carefully placed in the centre of the weighing pan.. As soon as a stable weighing value is reached the weighing value can be read. 3.2 Improper Use Do not use balance for dynamic weighings. In the event that small quantities are removed or added to the material to be weighed, incorrect weighing results can be displayed due to the stability compensation. (Example: Slowly draining fluids from a container on the balance.) Do not leave permanent load on the weighing pan. This may damage the measuring system. Impacts and overloading exceeding the stated maximum load (max) of the balance, minus a possibly existing tare load, must be strictly avoided. Balance may be damage by this. Never operate balance in explosive environment. The serial version is not explosion protected. The structure of the balance may not be modified. This may lead to incorrect weighing results, safety-related faults and destruction of the balance. The balance may only be used according to the described conditions. Other areas of use must be released by KERN in writing. 3.3 Warranty Warranty claims shall be voided in case 1. Our conditions in the operation manual are ignored 2. The appliance is used outside the described uses 3. The appliance is modified or opened 4. Mechanical damage or damage by media, liquids, natural wear and tear 5. The appliance is improperly set up or incorrectly electrically connected 6. The measuring system is overloaded 3.4 Monitoring of Test Resources In the framework of quality assurance the measuring-related properties of the balance and, if applicable, the testing weight, must be checked regularly. The responsible user must define a suitable interval as well as type and scope of this test. Information is available on KERN s home page ( with regard to the monitoring of balance test substances and the test weights required for this. In KERN s accredited DKD calibration laboratory test weights and balances may be calibrated (return to the national standard) fast and at moderate cost. 16 ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e-1333

4 Basic Safety Precautions 4.1 Pay attention to the instructions in the Operation Manual Carefully read this operation manual before setup and commissioning, even if you are already familiar with KERN balances. All language versions contain a non-binding translation. The original German is binding. 4.2 Personnel training The appliance may only be operated and maintained by trained personnel. 5 Transport and storage 5.1 Testing upon acceptance When receiving the appliance, please check packaging immediately, and the appliance itself when unpacking for possible visible damage. 5.2 Packaging / return transport Keep all parts of the original packaging for a possibly required return. Only use original packaging for returning. Prior to dispatch disconnect all cables and remove loose/mobile parts. Reattach possibly supplied transport securing devices. Secure all parts such as the glass wind screen, the weighing platform, power unit etc. against shifting and damage. ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e

6 Unpacking, Setup and Commissioning 6.1 Installation Site, Location of Use The balances are designed in a way that reliable weighing results are achieved in common conditions of use. You will work accurately and fast, if you select the right location for your balance. On the installation site observe the following: Place the balance on a firm, level surface Avoid extreme heat as well as temperature fluctuation caused by installing next to a radiator or in the direct sunlight Protect the balance against direct draughts due to open windows and doors Avoid jarring during weighing Protect the balance against high humidity, vapours and dust Do not expose the device to extreme dampness for longer periods of time. Non-permitted condensation (condensation of air humidity on the appliance) may occur if a cold appliance is taken to a considerably warmer environment. In this case, acclimatize the disconnected appliance for ca. 2 hours at room temperature. Avoid static charge of goods to be weighed and weighing container. Major display deviations (incorrect weighing results) may be experienced should electromagnetic fields (e.g. due to mobile phones or radio equipment), static electricity accumulations or instable power supply occur. Change location or remove source of interference. ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e

6.2 Unpacking, Scope of delivery Remove device and accessories carefully from packaging, remove packaging material and place device at the planned work place. Verify that there has been no damage and that all packing items are present. Scope of delivery / serial accessories: Balance, see chap. 2 Mains adapter Protective cover Operating instructions Transport Securing 6.3 Placing The right place is decisive for the accuracy of the weighing results of high-resolution analytical and precision balances (see chap. 6.1). Remove transportation lock On the left lower side of the balance replace the golden-coloured screw with the silver-coloured one (see label). 20 ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e-1333

Levelling balance Level balance with foot screws until the air bubble of the water balance is in the prescribed circle. Check levelling regularly. 6.4 Connect and switch-on power supply Before connecting the mains adapter check if the printed voltage value is the same as the local supply voltage. Only use KERN original mains adapter. Using other makes requires consent by KERN. Supply power to balance via mains adapter. The balance will carry out a self-test Then the balance is set into stand-by mode, OFF is displayed. To switch on press the ON/OFF button. During the display CAL adjustment is automatically carried out with the internal adjustment weight (see chap. 7.2). As soon as the weight display appears, the balance is ready for weighing. To switch off, press the ON/OFF button again. The balance returns into stand-by mode. 6.5 Connection of peripheral devices Before connecting or disconnecting of additional devices (printer, PC) to the data interface, always disconnect the balance from the power supply. With your balance, only use accessories and peripheral devices by KERN, as they are ideally tuned to your balance. 6.6 Initial Commissioning In order to obtain exact results with the electronic balances, your balance must have reached the operating temperature (see warming up time chap. 1). During this warming up time the balance must be connected to the power supply (mains, accumulator or battery). The accuracy of the balance depends on the local acceleration of gravity. Strictly observe hints in chapter Adjustment. 22 ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e-1333

7 Adjustment (all models excepted PLT-M) As the acceleration value due to gravity is not the same at every location on earth, each balance must be coordinated - in compliance with the underlying physical weighing principle - to the existing acceleration due to gravity at its place of location (only if the balance has not already been adjusted to the location in the factory). This adjustment process must be carried out for the first commissioning, after each change of location as well as in case of fluctuating environment temperature. To receive accurate measuring values it is also recommended to adjust the balance periodically in weighing operation. Observe stable environmental conditions. A warming up time (see chapter 1) is required for stabilization. Ensure that there are no objects on the weighing pan. Issue of an adjustment log, see chap The balances have been set to Automatic adjustment (see chap. 7.2) by factory. If necessary, in the menu the following possibilities of adjustment can be activated. Internal adjustm. External adjustm. Technical adjustm. Autom. adjustm. 30 9 Verification General introduction: According to EU directive 90/384/EEC balances must be officially verified if they are used as follows (legally controlled area): a) For commercial transactions if the price of goods is determined by weighing. b) For the production of medicines in pharmacies as well as for analyses in the medical and pharmaceutical laboratory. c) For official purpose. d) For manufacturing final packages. In cases of doubt, please contact your local trade in standard. Verification notes: An EU type approval exists for balances described in their technical data as verifiable. If a balance is used where obligation to verify exists as described above, it must be verified and re-verified at regular intervals. Re-verification of a balance is carried out according to the respective national regulations. The validity for verification of balances in Germany is e.g. 2 years. The legal regulation of the country where the balance is used must be observed! After verification the balance is sealed at the indicated positions. Verification of the balance is invalid without the "seal". Position of the seal mark (models PLT) Balances with obligation to verify must be taken out of operation if: The weighing result of the balance is outside the error limit. Therefore, in regular intervals load balance with known test weight (ca. 1/3 of the max. load) and compare with displayed value. The reverification deadline has been exceeded. 30 ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e-1333

10 Basic Operation 10.1 Switch on off balance Start-up: In stand-by mode (see chap. 6.4) press ON/OFF button. As soon as the weight display appears, the balance is ready for weighing. Switching off: Press ON/OFF. The balance changes into standby mode, that means that the balance is now in state ready-for-operation.. To switch-off the balance completely, separate balance from power supply Zeroing Unload the balance Press the TARE key. The zero display and the indicator [-0-] will appear. ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e

10.3 Simple weighing In order to obtain exact weighing results, your balance must have reached the operating temperature (see warming up time chap. 1). Wait for zero display, reset to zero using TARE. Place goods to be weighed on balance. Wait until the stability display appears [ ]. Read weighing result. When an optional printer is connected, the weighing value can be edited. 54 12.1 Parts counting Before the balance can count parts, it must know the average part weight (i.e. reference). Proceed by putting on a certain number of the parts to be counted. The balance determines the total weight and divides it by the number of parts, the socalled reference quantity. Counting is then carried out on the basis of the calculated average piece weight. As a rule: The higher the reference quantity the higher the counting exactness Determine reference by weighing In weighing mode press MENU button. The master menu will be displayed. Use the navigation buttons to select the menu item Piece counting. Acknowledge using PRINT button, the currently set reference quantity is displayed. Use the navigation buttons to select the desired setting. Display Description 10 off Reference piece number off Reference piece number off Reference piece number off Reference piece number 100 Manual Numerical input of reference weight, see chap ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e-1333

If necessary place a weighing container, confirm the set reference piece number by pressing the PRINT button. Place as many pieces to add-up as required by the set reference piece number. Acknowledge using PRINT button and wait for stability display. As soon as the weighing result is stable, the determined average piece weight will be taken over as reference weight. The currently placed weight W, the reference weight MPW and the piece number PCS are displayed. Remove reference weight. The balance is now in parts counting mode counting all units on the weighing pan. ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e

If it was impossible to determine a reference due to instable goods to be weighed or an insufficient reference weight, the following display will appear during reference calculation. Smallest counting weight not achieved Increase the counted weight or select a balance with high resolution or If in the display Add pieces.. appears, the balance asks for a reference optimisation, as the placed number of pieces was not sufficient for a correct reference calculation. Place more parts, but at least the double quantity. Press the PRINT button, the reference is calculated anew. The placed quantity is always too small, add more parts (double quantity) and acknowledge using the PRINT button. Repeat the procedure until the piece counter display appears. Placed quantity sufficient for reference determination. Remove reference weight. The balance is now in parts counting mode counting all units on the weighing pan. 56 ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e-1333

Carry out parts counting After having calculated the reference, place the pieces which will be counted. The currently placed weight G, the reference weight AUW and the calculated piece number St. are displayed. The display value can be printed out by connecting an optional printer. Printout example (KERN YKB-01N): :41:17 Current date/time PCS 20 Calculated piece number Weight: 199,9985 g Weight placed on balance MPW: g Reference weight Return to weighing mode Press the ON/OFF key ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e

Numeric entry of the reference weight If the piece weight (reference) is known, it can be entered directly. As the balance in this method needs not to calculate any reference, the balance after confirming the reference piece weight will be directly in parts counting mode. In weighing mode press MENU button. The master menu will be displayed. Use the navigation buttons to select the menu item Piece counting. Acknowledge using PRINT button, the currently set reference quantity is displayed. Use the MENU button to select the Manual setting. Confirm by pressing the PRINT button. Use the navigation buttons (see chap ) to enter the known reference piece weight in grams. To set a decimal point press the CAL button long time. The input is deleted by pressing the TARE button a longer time. Confirm by pressing the PRINT button. From here on the balance is in parts counting mode and counts all pieces which are placed on the weighing pan (see chap Carry our parts counting ). If the minimum parts weight is not reached, an error message will appear. Use the ON/OFF button to return to the weighing mode and restart the procedure. Return to weighing mode Press the ON/OFF key 58 ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e-1333

Automatic reference optimization In order to improve the counting exactness, the reference can be optimised by adding more pieces. At every reference optimisation, the reference weight is calculated anew. As the additional pieces increase the base for the calculation, the reference also becomes more exact. Leave the piece number on the weighing pan after setting the reference weight Duplicate the number of pieces on the weighing pan and wait until the acoustic signal sounds. The reference weight is calculated anew. Either repeat the reference optimisation by adding more pieces (max. 255 pieces) or start the counting process. The automatic reference optimisation is not active when the reference weight is entered numerically. ALT_B-PLT_A-PLT_F-BA-e

12.2 Density determination (Hydrostatic weighing) Density is the relationship of weight [g] : volume [cm 3 ]. The weight is determined by weighing the sample in air. The volume results from the ascending force [g] of the sample dipped in a liquid. The density [g/cm 3 ] of that liquid is known (principle of Archimedes). The density is determined with help of the underfloor weighing device. We recommend to switch off the automatic adjustment in the setup menu, see chap Density determination of solids Prepare the balance as follows: Switch off the balance Remove the weighing pan and carefully turn over the weighing balance. Suspend hook for underfloor weighing (optional) Place weighing balance over an opening Prepare suspension device Fill measuring liquid e.g. water in a vessel e.g. beaker and temper it. Calculate density: In weighing mode press MENU button. The master menu will be displayed. Use the navigation buttons to select the menu item Density.
