5 Opening Remarks UN/ECE International Standards for Industry Benefit. (Economic Interest) The Standards, applied correctly, produce: - Less Claims - Satisfied Customers And most importantly.. REPEAT BUSINESS

To define common trading language for all participants in the supply chain To simplify international trade To create market transparency To prevent technical barriers to trade To facilitate fair international trade To avoid bad quality products on the markets To guide producers to meet market requirements To build trust and market opportunities To encourage high quality production To improve producers profitability To protect consumers interests 6

8 Custodianship Responsibility To Review and Update the Standards. I just want to highlight the commitment and scrutiny applied in the development of the UNECE Standards (as well as the investment in time and money) and that as Custodian of the Standards, the Specialized Section has an important role in maintaining and updating them as being current and relevant to trading practice.

9 History Chicken Standard Started in 2000 at the Rapporteurs meeting in Brazil First draft by Rapporteur: US with input from France, UK and Brazil Rapporteurs meeting on Poultry Meat, in Washington, from 29 to 31 October 2001 Meeting of Rapporteurs on Chicken Meat in Brittany (Rennes) September 2002 Moscow meeting of the Rapporteurs on Chicken Meat (15-17 September 2003) November 2003 adoption of the Chicken Standard 2004 to 2006 Specialized Section meetings - final corrections introduced 2006 version printed in 2007

16 History: Turkey Standard proposed at 2004 Specialized Section meeting Rapporteur: US started in 2005 at Specialized Section meeting (GVA) with first draft reviewed at 2005 Warsaw Rapporteurs Meeting discussed at the 2006 Specialized Section Meeting in Brisbane final adoption 2006

17 UNECE Standard for Turkey Meat The UNECE Standard for Turkey Meat - Carcases and Parts was agreed upon by the Specialized Section on Standardization of Meat in April The amended text was presented to the Working party and approved as a new Standard for Turkey Meat Carcasses and Parts The approved Standard published in 2009.

(Economic Interest) The Standard incorporates the GS1 System for Logistics And Export Provides Standards for bar coding, message structure and information transfer. Provides auditable product traceability and can identify cartons subject to claim or dispute Provides efficiencies in recording, accounting and product movement along the supply chain Provides the basis for Regulators to develop efficient and effective inspection systems. Confidence between Buyer and Seller and the facilitation of trade
