The reasons for this are : 1/ Booklet integrity 2/ Reliability with minimum maintenance 3/ High speed output 4/ Variable number of pages: 5/ Cover matching 6/ Document personalisation and tracking 22

EXAM PRINTER IN CAMBRIDGE, UK 4 Canon ink jet web printers and 3 cut sheet printers all in-line with IBIS Smart-binder SB-2s Systems in operation for 6 years : each web line produced over 70 million exam papers Typical exam papers contain 8, 12 or 16 pages High integrity required: additional detection systems fitted Web lines recently replaced last year new Canon printers and new IBIS Smart-binders. Each web line producing over 1 million booklets each month (over 4 million/month in total). 23

Insurance document printing IBIS Smart-binders are frequently used to produce insurance documents. The main reasons for this are : 1/ Personalisation and Booklet integrity. 2/ Reliability with minimum maintenance 3/ Variable number of pages 4/ Cover matching 5/ Document tracking and reprinting of missing documents 24

Insurance company R & V in Wiesbaden Canon and Xerox web printing (roll to roll) Kern unwinder and web cutter feeding Smart-binder SB-3 : ISG cold gluing only Separately fed covers with windows Each booklet individually personalised Booklets vary continually between 8 pp and 180 pp In-line Duerselen hole driller Go to to view video of the SB-3 in operation at R & V 25

PART 4 Smart-binder USPs and Options 26

Smart-binder USPs Very heavy duty design for 7 x 24hr operation (some customer produce over 1million booklets/month on each machine for many years) Can run in-line with highest speed digital web printers. Can produce (thin) booklets at 7,000 bph (1-up) or 14,000 bph (2-up) Bar code(or 2D code) sheet detection, tracking and data logging, with auto-book reject Able to vary book thickness on-the-run (to suit books of one ) Patented Individual sheet gluing (ISG) : alternative to convention wire stitching Individual sheet folding for excellent book lay-flat and maximum 10mm book thickness 3-side trimming for optimum finished book quality Large range of available options, including perfect binding 27

Smart-binder USP: Multiple binding options SB-2 SB-3 SB-4 Side glue Wire staples (stitches) ISG cold glue ISG cold glued signatures Hot-melt spine glue 28

Conventional wire stitching (all model Smart-binders) 2,3 or 4 staples Flat stitch or loop stitch 29

Unique patented ISG (Individual Sheet Gluing) Process Available with models SB-3 and SB-4 30

ISG glue Process (continued) ISG gluing Produces a booklet with better lay flat characteristics an advantage for mailing operations ISG cold glued Wire stitched 31

Smart-binder SB-4 System Perfect bound book delivery Max 60 mm Saddle-bound book delivery (max 10mm) 32

Perfect binding using ISG-glued signatures Smart-binder SB-4 33

Smart-binder USP: Sheet folding IBIS Smart-binder folds sheets individually before collection Other booklet-makers fold multiple sheets together Each incoming sheet is scored and plow folded individually. This maximizes finished booklet quality (thick books lay flatter) Sheets are first collected into sets (multiple sheets together) and then plow folded all together. Fold tightness is reduced. Thick books have larger gape in center 34

Smart-binder USP: Sheet folding (continued) 72-page booklet made on the IBIS Smart-binder at IPEX page booklet made on the Horizon Stitchliner at IPEX 14 35

Smart-binder USP: Unique book trimmer Up to 7,000 cycles/hour The only saddle-binder trimmer that required no adjustment when book thickness changes Books between min thickness one folded sheet (8 pages) and max thickness 10mm (0.39 ) Centre-knife (4/5 th Knife) available Hole punch available 36

Smart-binder USP: Data integrity and control Integrated controls and software detect and track each sheet Data-rich log file contains production data on each individual booklet Log file creates an audit trail, and an individual booklet number can be assigned Cover-to-text matching also available Customer can choose desired barcode or 2D code High-integrity applications: - Exam papers- Insurance - etc 37

Data integrity and control (continued) 38

Smart-binder USP: Variable thickness booklets Thin book Thick book Thin book Bar codes control number of pages in each book Trimmer requires no adjustment for book thickness change ISG gluing applied automatically and allows thickness change on-the-run New option! Dynamic stitching automatically adjusts staples on-the-run to suit book thickness 39

Smart-binder USP: New Dynamic Stitching (Option ASA-100) Automatically adjusts staples on-the-run to suit book thickness Allows for constantly varying number of pages Go to to view ASA-100 video Total wire length, approx. 35mm Total wire length, approx. 23 mm Maximum book thickness (10 mm) Minimum book thickness (2 sheets) 40

Smart-binder USP: High throughput speeds Input speed 4-page sheets (unfolded) at 150 metres/min web speed. 8-page sheets (with buckle-folder). at 200 metres/min web speed: Output Speed 7,000 booklets/hour (1-up) or 14,000 bks/hr 2-up 41
