5 Port of Holyhead Holyhead Port is the second busiest ferry port in the United Kingdom with only Dover handling more cars and road goods vehicles each year. Holyhead Port accommodates over 70% of road vehicles passing through all Welsh Ports and managed some 2,852,000 tonnes of cargo in 2009 including a wide variety of imports; general cargo, gas oil, metals, petroleum coke and aggregates. There are over 6,000 ferry movements per year and over 300 visits from bulk carriers, cruise liners, coasters and large fishing vessels. Over 2.5 million passengers, 500,000 cars and 350,000 freight units pass through the Port on an annual basis. Countless numbers of small fishing vessels and leisure craft also call at the Port. The Port is not tidally restricted and is open 24 hrs per day for deep-sea and coastal vessels and is well protected from prevailing south westerly winds by its position to the due east of Holyhead Mountain, and by its 2.4 kilometre historic breakwater which shelters an area of some 260 hectares. Holyhead Port is strategically located on the Ten - T road network - Euroroute E22 linking the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Latvia and Russia, to the Port of Dublin and inland Ireland. Stena Line, Europe s biggest ferry company, operates from the Port as do Irish Ferries. Ferries sail to Dublin City and Dun Laoghaire in Ireland and this forms the principal link for surface transport from central and Northern England and Wales to Ireland. There is also a growing marina presence within the protected harbour limits, which will ultimately have a capacity for over 1000 boats, plus associated facilities.
