3 PAGE 3 OF 9 INTRODUCTION The importance of head protection, where there is a potential for injury from falling objects and which requires hard hats to be worn, is crucial in terms of operator safety. It is therefore important to ensure that hard hats comply with the required specifications and are of acceptable quality. City Power will only purchase equipment that bears the SABS stamp. 1 SCOPE This specification covers City Power s requirements for protective hard hats to be worn in a working environment in accordance with SANS NORMATIVE REFERENCES The following documents contain provisions that, through reference in the text, constitute requirements of this specification. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards and specifications are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this specification are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the documents listed below. SANS 1397: Industrial safety helmets for head protection ANSI Z89.1 Personal protective headwear for Industrial workers requirements OHS ACT: Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS The definitions and abbreviations in SANS 1397 shall apply to this specification. Class A Helmets: are intended to reduce the force of impact of a falling object and to reduce the danger of contact with exposed low voltage electrical conductors. For certification, sample shells are proof tested at 2200 volts. Class B Helmets: are intended to reduce the force of impact of a falling object and to reduce the danger of contact with exposed high voltage electrical conductors. For certification, sample shells are proof tested at volts. Type 2 helmets: a helmet which has no encircling brim, but may include short brim on the front. 4 REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Hard hats for working at ground level General requirements Test a) All hard hats used shall bear the SABS mark and shall comply with SANS b) All hard hats shall be purchased with an adjustable chin strap in accordance with SANS c) The colour of the hard hats shall be blue in accordance with City Power corporate identity. d) The colour of City Power logo on the hard hats shall be in accordance with City Power s corporate identity. Hard hat shall be tested in accordance to SANS Packaging and labelling The hard hat shall be packed in a suitable packaging.

4 PAGE 4 OF Hard hats for working from Height General requirements a) All hard hats used shall bear the SABS mark and shall comply with SANS b) All hard hats shall be purchased with an adjustable chin strap in accordance with SANS c) Shall have a shortened sun peak; d) Limited side rims/gutter; e) Webbing suspension harness; f) Thick sweat band of +/- 4.5 cm; g) Adjustable head bands of standard size 53 cm to 63 cm; Test Hard hat shall be tested in accordance to SANS Packaging and labelling The hard hat shall be packed in a suitable packaging. 4 DOCUMENTATION 4.1 Certification from the manufacturers of the hard hat shall be supplied. 4.2 Detailed test reports confirming compliance with SANS 1397 and shall be provided. 4.3 In addition to the documentation required above, full technical information relating to the performance, construction, etc of the hard hat shall be supplied. 5. QUALITY MANAGEMENT A quality management plan shall be set up in order to assure the proper quality management of the hard hats during design, development, production, installation and servicing phases. Guidance on the requirements for a quality management plan may be found in the SANS ISO The details shall be subject to agreement between City Power and the Supplier. 6. ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT An environmental management plan shall be set up in order to assure the proper environmental management of the hard hats throughout its entire life cycle (i.e. during design, development, production, installation, operation and maintenance, decommissioning and disposal phases). Guidance on the requirements for an environmental management system may be found in SANS ISO standards. The details shall be subject to agreement between City Power and the Supplier. This is to ensure that the asset created conforms to environmental standards and City Power SHEQ Policy. 7. HEALTH AND SAFETY A health and safety plan shall be set up in order to ensure proper management of the hard hats and compliance of the queuing system during installation, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning phases. Guidance on the requirements of a health and safety plan may be found in OHSAS standards. This is to ensure that the asset conforms to standard operating procedures and City Power SHERQ Policy. The details shall be subject to agreement between City Power and the Supplier.
