4 Question Is recycling required by law at events that sell beverages in Washington?

5 Yes. Recycling is Required. Department of Ecology requires that events in Washington have recycling. RCW Summary of the law: Beverage vendors are responsible for providing and funding the recycling program. A recycling program must include and provide: -Clearly marked recycling receptacles or reverse vending machines -Collection of aluminum, glass, or plastic bottle or cans that contained the beverages sold by the vendor -Transportation and recycling services for the collected materials

6 Green Getting Started: How green will your event be? Some options on the green spectrum Recycling containers with signs beside trash cans. Contaminated containers will be tossed as garbage. Greener- Green items PLUS Staff or volunteers pluck incorrect items at the end. Greenest- Green and Greener items PLUS Vendors are required to use all compostable or recyclable serviceware. Staff or volunteers staff stations during the event to educate the public while diverting waste.

7 Getting Started: Form a plan. Form a team. 1. Will your event be green, greener or greenest? Is your goal to divert material, educate the public or both? 2. Will you collect recycling, compostables or both? 3. What is your budget for materials (signs and containers)? 4. What types of containers will you use? What options are available to you? 5. Who will be involved? Are volunteers or staff available?

8 Preparation: Serviceware Considerations Require vendors to use recyclable or compostable serviceware Educate vendors about Cedar Grove approved compostable serviceware. Ban Styrofoam serviceware.

14 Getting Started: Volunteers Rule! Set them up for success. Considerations Train volunteers to determine what is recyclable and compostable, and how to staff stations. Remind volunteers to be friendly. Provide tools: nifty nabbers, gloves, ponchos, official identification (lanyards, shirts etc.) Train volunteers to check containers at the end and pluck incorrect items. Provide snacks, water and lots of thank you Including later recognition.

Educate vendors at the start of the festival and check serviceware Place recycling/composting and garbage containers in locations that are convenient for vendors to use too Consider recognizing vendors with the correct items
