1 National Institute for Longevity Sciences - Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA): A Follow-Up Study "Follow-Up Postal Survey 1" of the first-wave participants of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences - Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA) I.Study Objective and Overview Date of implementation: August 2013 I.Study Objective and Overview II."Follow-Up Postal Survey 1" of the NILS-LSA Extending the healthy lifespan of the elderly is an important issue in this rapidly aging society. When considering old age from a health preservation perspective, basic medical research, which investigates the progression of aging, aging factors, and factors associated with the onset of geriatric diseases, plays a highly significant role. The objective of this study was to conduct a postal survey to investigate the current health and daily living statuses of the 2,267 participants who had taken part in the first wave (between 1997 and 2000) of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences - Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA). Participants were randomly selected age- and sexstratified individuals from a pool of non-institutionalized residents in the NILS neighborhood areas of Obu City and Higashiura Town in Aichi Prefecture. The first wave of the NILS-LSA was conducted from November 1997 to April 2000 and comprised 2,267 participants (1,139 men, 1,128 women; age range, years). In August 2013, self-administered questionnaires were delivered to participants to assess their health status. After excluding participants who died (identified through the Basic Resident Register or information from families), questionnaires were delivered to 1,933 individuals out of the 2,267 baseline participants. A total of 1,462 respondents (76% collection rate, March 2014) replied. The breakdown of the 1,462 respondents by gender and age group are shown in Table 1. Apart from the 1,462 respondents, the breakdown of the 471 non- respondents was as follows: death (24 deaths reported on returned questionnaire), withdrawal (1), address unknown (33), and no reply (413). Table 1.
