The Objective of WP 3 To develop innovative intermodal transport systems and concepts through the use of transport and logistics centres. The focus was on the logistics centres in relation to transport and economic corridors. 3 Activities under WP3 Case study of the economics and logistics of intermodal network components, port terminals and logistics centres. Erasmus University The Nederland's Analysis of institutional and organisational solutions in the development of transport & logistics centres. FDT - Denmark Case study on the spatial and environmental impact of port / logistics centres development. IVL - Sweden Promotion strategies for intermodal transport solution. ISL - Germany 4 2

The aim of FDT s contribution to the studies: To collect practical examples on Transport & Logistics Centres based on the institutional and organisational aspects. To develop the concept of s as facilitators for innovative transport solutions. 7 PPP: BILK Kombiterminal in Hungary 13 PPP: Interporto Bologna SpA - Italy - The area of the Bologna Freight Village is 2 million sq. m., where the building covers 250,000 sq. m. In these building the national and international transport companies for warehousing and logistics, freight transport and international forwarding operate. - The objective of the Interporto s activity is to plan and build (by the means of all the essential operations: purchase, sale, exchange, leasing etc) a united number of infrastructures and integrated services aimed at supporting the exchange of goods by all the transport modes. 14 7

PPP: Klaipeda (KLC) - Lithuania - The final in Klaipeda is planned to comprise a land area of 100ha containing storage facilities, parking area, administration and other buildings and a green zone for recreation area. - The advantage of placing a in Klaipeda is its 21 million ton ice-free port with several potential future connections and a significant share of transit traffic. From Klaipeda, there are rail connections to several destinations in Russia. 15 PPP: Nordic Transport Centre (NTC) - Denmark 16 8

The General Model of PPP Framework for Transport & Logistic Centre 17 Developments Cooperation between s on a fixed transport corridor (rail, road and maritime) Motorways of the Sea Region Road, Rail, Maritime Region Port Port 18 9

Developments National / regional Logistics Centres network New Master Plan for Logistics Centres in Portugal (June 2006) 19 Developments Ports develops into s with supporting hinterland transport network 18 full container train shuttles are operated by seven different railway operators linking to Port of Gothenburg 20 10

Developments Globalisation demands transport corridors with Logsitics Centres in all continents. E.g. New initiative between EU and Africa New Trans-African Transport Corridors 21 Final Remarks (I) On average, logistics costs account for 10-15% of the final cost of the finished product. This includes costs such as transportation and warehousing. Globalisation of production and the corresponding supply chains increase the need for efficient s. Market and business integration through European co-operation with other major logistics centres in the world (e.g. with the US, Russia, Japan, China, India, Brazil) will need to be ensured. Competition between Europe, the US and the Far East, in particular, is becoming a significant factor and can have consequences on nodal points (especially seaports and airports) and infrastructure capacity. Logistics is becoming increasingly important - not only within Europe but also for Europe s international business relations

Final Remarks (II) PPP and the fixed definition are preconditions for succesfull new logistics solutions in the frame of LCs Integrate LCs in transport infrastructure policy and planning. Priority of LCs in transport infrastructure investments. Increase the return of transport infrastructure investments with LC s. Use LC s as framework for new business opportunities and commercial growth. 23 Conclusive Remark More globalisation leads to increased need for s Kent Bentzen 24 12
