2 BACKGROUND, OBJECTIVES AND IMPACTS The aim of the research project is to improve traffic safety by deploying operating models and technical solutions. The project comprises different transport modes and administrative sectors. The project promotes road safety and maintains the level of railway and maritime safety. Especially road safety projects are long-term and aim at reaching the national goal of reducing the number of traffic fatalities by half in the 2010's

3 CURRENT PROJECTS Ongoing projects (FTA Project Manager in brackets): Traffic safety 2025, e.g. Effects of speed and speed limits on road safety and the environment (Päivi Nuutinen) Review and assessment of safety measures for road-railway level crossings (Jarmo Koistinen) Safety of median barriers a pilot study (Kari Lehtonen) Advanced management and analysis tool of accident data ONHA (Auli Forsberg) Projects by the research division of the Consultative Committee on Road Safety at the Ministry of Transport and Communications Vaakku - estimation of the number of seriously injured (Auli Forsberg) Development of traffic safety plans in municipalities (Auli Forsberg) Improvement of the safety of urban traffic and pedestrian crossings (Tuomas Österman) Traffic safety and land use planning (Jarmo Joutsensaari) Effects of reindeer warning signs (Auli Forsberg) Safety-critical axle counting operations (Jari-Pekka Kitinoja) Use of location signs in railway traffic (Jari-Pekka Kitinoja) Safety impact assessment of remote voltage detectors in catenary work (Juha-Matti Vilppo)

5 UTILISATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF RESEARCH RESULTS Road transport research is typically strategic. Some of the research is concretised in the form of instructions and processes aimed at the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (Transport and Infrastructure), some is reported to stakeholders and decision-makers. The railway system is continuously advancing as new technology and solutions are put into practice. The results of safety research are often related to the new solutions. Incidents can highlight the research and development needs to be met and implemented after completion of the work. Research has provided more information about road and level crossing safety, but this information has not influenced the solutions and decisions on the infrastructure network to the desired extent. Therefore, the grounds for solutions and decisions should be better communicated in the future
